Jojo- here is another try at link to wiki:
en.wikipedia.org the chart is in Sieverts, but corresponds closely with the millisieverts listed on Reuters article. I know is referrign to short term- so was this link- was talking hours to months and giving symptoms that mirrored the ones on Reutes.

The unit gray measures absorbed radiation which is absorbed into any material. The unit sievert specifically measures absorbed radiation which is absorbed by a person. The equivalent dose to a person is found by multiplying the absorbed dose, in gray, by a weighting factor (W). The weighting factor (sometimes referred to as a quality factor) is determined by a combination of: the radiation type, the tissue absorbing the radiation, and other pertinent factors. Then you have to factor in the tpe of radiation and how old the person is, what part of the body was affected and so on...It just seems like we really don't know anything with just being given amounts using this system unless we are there.

@Meretisa I couldn't link to Wikipedia but the Reuters story appears correct. But that Reuters story is talking about short-term acute effects of radiation, which are different from long-term effects (everyone in the surrounding area for decades to come).

Rule of thumb is that exposure to 1 Sv (1000 mSv) will mean your chance of getting cancer is 1%, chance of dying from cancer is .05%. It's linear so exposure to 2 Sv would be 2% chance, etc. This is the lifetime % chance, not immediate effect. Once you start having larger doses your effects would be immediate though (radiation sickness, burns, etc.)

Sinthia- I am not an expert either, but they are very odd in their differences. I'm just very worried suddenly that the numbers we're getting and interpreting one way are actually much worse than we assume. Perhaps I'm just tired. You DO see the discrepancy though, right?

@Meretisa I don't think they are off, but the problem is that in some media reports they use microsieverts, and in some they use millisieverts. My understanding is that at 100 mSv is when they can definitively link exposure to cancer, where every 100 mSv is about a 1% increase in getting cancer from the exposure (at some point in your life). For children there is a higher chance of getting cancer at 100 mSv.

@Sin and others. I understand you can't plan for everything. I do have a math and science background, which is why I worry, especially when it comes to risk management. Risk management is one of the huge reasons we are not getting info we should about this incident. In studying TMI and Chernobyl you find incidents were gov't knew things were very precarious, but wouldn't evacuate because it will cause panic, people will die because they can't handle the situation gracefully. So what happens, someone runs the numbers and they see, well, if we evacuate Tokyo we have nowhere for people to go, and x number people will die. But if we keep quiet, well, yeah sure tons of people will die in the next decade or two, but we have plausible denilability.

could someone look at my last post and comment. It seems to me that the symptoms for millisieverts overlaps those of sieverts, but at an odd level- the numbers just don't add up. My understnading is that millisieverts means 1,000 to equal 1 Sv... which means the info in the reuters article is off... could Japan be giving us wrong/different info? Could it be like their earthquake scale beign different from others?? Thoughts??

@Jim Carver, exactly the point. Those who think you can plan for everything based on our last hundred or so years of history are sorely wrong. The New Madrid Fault Line is one scenario that emergency planners need to be aware of. Another one that comes to mind is the Carrington Event of 1859, a massive solar flare that hit the earth and destroyed our budding Telegraph system. Experts seem to agree if that hit the earth today it has the capacity to take out the electrical grid completely and for an extended amount of time. How can any expect to tame a nuclear power plant in such a scenario. I know Japan has records going back many centuries for tsunamis. If anyone had paid attention they would have known an event such as the one that just occurred was possible, and in fact happened around 700 or 800 AD (I forget the year). Anyway, I'm no expert, but I do have a grasp on history. Just make sure that people who are involved in the Nuclear industry as also aware of the possibilities before they convince you nuclear power is safe and they have accounted for everyting.

I OPINION: Its the greed of the companies that own them that make them dangerous, the same as in any industry, especially in tough economic times, there is more of a tendency to cut corners. Government agencies and regulatory bodies show time and time again their capacity for corruption and lax oversight. Its human nature, and we are not responsible enough as a species in my opinion to have anything with such capability for destruction by so few that has the potential to devastate so many.

Actually the events at Fukushima have not made me consider nuclear power as unviable or more dangerous than i previously thought. I am ok with nuclear energy but I do think that we need to assess the possible safety needs of a given plant and then put in 3 times as many safety protocols/containment structures as we think are necessary. Honestly, as we've heard lately, coal mining is dangerous, and its refining and processing is dirty and even radioactive as well. Most of our major fuel sources at this time have some sort of extreme drawback.

Nuclear power is great until you factor in two externalities: 1) the cradle-grave costs associated with mining, processing, safe handling, and appropriate long term (very) disposal of the fuel; and 2) human error, which cannot be completely eliminated. Even if you could eliminate #2 I believe the total costs of #1 exceed the value of all the power produced. You sure can make a big mess in a hurry . . .

High level of iodine 131 in seawater near N-plant
A high level of radioactive iodine has been detected in seawater near Japan's troubled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The facility was hit by the March 11th earthquake and tsunami.

Here's a link to NLE 2011 for those in the midwest:
www.fema.gov Lots of us seem to think, duh, they built reactors on fault lines, they should have planned for this. Well, many of us have reactors in our backyards and don't know live on fault lines. I post this info just so people who live in these areas have an awareness, so that we can make sure our local politicians and utilities have plans for 'unexpected scenarios'. Anyway, enough of my rambling, that was just one thing I wanted to get out for those who want to hear.

@Meritisa Yes, I just read that, too. I also liked that in the notes on the bottom they say rad water likely came from the core. But up in the graph, they list #3 reactor vessel as undamaged.

@sin thanks. I was previously not very informed about our nuclear power plants previous to the Japan situation either, and to be honest I'm still pretty ignorant. I have learned quite a great deal about nuclear power in general since this started and found out that the topic interests me. I appreciate the article.

@Everyone- HERE you all are!! Been searching and looking and being frustrated! About the new JAIF release: "Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station has been in serious condition since some units lost cooling function. TEPCO is trying to recover components for cooling that should be driven by external AC power. However, working condition in high radiation area is so bad and there is no prospect of accomplishing the work for this recovery. (05:15, March 26)" OMFG. Are they saying (finally) that they are going to cement the damn thing??

Seems like many of us are in the Midwest. I see people posting from Illinois(such as myself), Kentucky, Missouri, etc. We all have nuclear power plants in the area. We all think we're safe, we don't have hurricanes, or quakes or tsunamis here, or do we? Recorded history is extremely short. Look into NLE 2011, it's a FEMA exercise to practice responding to an earthquake at the New Madrid fault line. I didn't even know it existed or that we were vulnerable here, but it appears it does and we are. You can't plan for everything. Unless you can make a nuke plant that can gracefully fail under extreme seismic activity or with long term power loss you can't convince yourself its safe. It's just one thing that I've been thinking about since this incident in Japan. We really need to evaluate risk on different scales and with longer views of history.

In the military, a threat assessment is not what some country might do, but what they have the capabilities to do. With nuclear power, don't look at what might happen if an accident happens, look at what would happen if an accident occurred.. The stakes are high and engineers can build safe plants, but will businessmen and politicians let them? Sorry for the earlier post, getting tired :-)

@marie The 63 MW Boiling Water Reactor at the Humboldt Bay Nuclear Power Plant in Eureka was in operation by PG&E from August 1963 to July 1976. It was the seventh licensed nuclear plant in the United States. It was closed because the economics of a required seismic retrofit could not be justified following a moderate earthquake from a previously unknown fault just off the coast. It was permanently shut down July 2, 1976, and retired in 1985. The plant was then placed in SAFSTOR (with spent nuclear fuel rods stored in water pools on site) until anticipated full decommissioning in 2015.

ok... since everyone is introducing themselves... i've been monitoring since the early days of reuters... haven't posted anything because i didn't want to detract from the useful conversations going on... i've lived in asia before, currently i live in chicago... i know we get a lot of our power from nuclear plants in illinois. i've also come to learn that people in the nuclear industry have convinced themselves that nuclear power is safe. that through their systems of backups and backups to backups that they can cover any issues that might arise. it seems pretty clear to me that this is a haphazard system. while i don't oppose it entirely, i think this is a good example of how you can't plan for everything. most of all i'm just here to learn and try to get to the truth behind what's happening. anyway, i tend to ramble, i'm going to stop now, will let everyone know if i have something useful to share.

I think Fukushima tells us that we were right about the risks and problems with this stuff. Containment and storage. We are already seeing people wanting to gloss this over and not do anything. Ha, maybe do some spot checks and bring the cameraman. I'll have to check the numbers, but it used to be close to all the spent waste was stored on site, whether it was electric plant, hospital, munnitions dump, etc.

Yep, but so were the plants built in the 1950's The safest that could be built. Newest technology. Great stuff. Now plants built in the 1970's are old and dangerous.20 years from now plants built today will be old, out-dated, and dangerous if history is any guide.

how incredibly mis-leading that IAEA update is: Unit 1. thay got the lights on but nobody's home, due to pools of rad h2o; Unit 3. Spraying from a distance = spitting in the wind ; unit 2. IAEA update just now posted :
Brief Update on State of Fukushima Daiichi Reactors
Japanese authorities today confirmed a number of developments at the nuclear reactors at Fukushima Daiichi.
Unit 1
Workers have restored lighting in the control room and have recovered some instrumentation. As of 25 March, fresh water is now being pumped into the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) instead of seawater.
Unit 2
Seawater injection into the reactor pressure vessel continues, and RPV pressures remain stable.
Unit 3
Workers are now pumping fresh water into the RPV, while seawater is pumped into the spent fuel pool. In addition, firefighters sprayed water into the reactor building yesterday from the outside.
Unit 4
With no fuel in the RPV, concerns remain focused on the condition of the spent fuel pool, and workers continued to use a concrete pump truck to pour water into the pool from above while pumping seawater into the pool through the fuel pool cooling line.
Units 5 and 6
Both reactors have achieved safe, cold shutdown, and their fuel pool temperatures have stabilised at acceptable levels.

As for level six, it should have been classified as such back when Germany and France assessed it as such. Is the IAEA waiting on the GOJ to give it the go-ahead? Likely. I've always been a proponent of nuclear energy. But it's been made abundantly clear by this crisis that without an international governing board with TEETH, the risks are too great. Noone is at the wheel except those who stand to lose the most by admitting problems.

What am I missing? I thought they were reported at very high levels? According to the IAEA: from 3/26 "Japanese authorities today reported data on radiation samples collected 30 kilometres off shore of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant on 24 March, and the levels of iodine-131 and cesium-137 showed slight variations from data collected at the same locations on 23 March.
A vessel from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) collected water samples at eight points 30 kilometres from the coastline and found measurable concentrations of iodine-131 and cesium-137. The iodine concentrations measured were about at Japanese regulatory limits, and the cesium levels were well below those limits."

@Karen I've learned through this process that I truly don't comprehend Japanese culture. The population's reaction has been so unlike anything we would witness here, it's hard to grasp. In a good way, for the most part. But that very polite culture also inhibits the demand for honest answers. I've come to the conclusion that the Japanese people themselves prefer their disasters to be orderly, even if it means dishonesty from TEPCO and the GOJ. Otherwise we would be seeing a demand for answers from the people themselves. Interesting dynamics.

Bev: At this juncture, you would think that it would be classified as a Level 6. Are they working on the logistics of an evacuation plan before escalating this thing up? I have to believe that brightest minds in the world are either on the ground or involved in an information-sharing capacity unless the GoJ dissuaded the participation in the beginning. Pride is the greatest sin.

I cannot find the article I read last night but I'd like to reference it again. It mentioned a failure mode observed at the Peach Bottom plant (?) and specifically the 258+ fittings at the bottom of the RPV for the control rod drivers and for instrumentation that penetrates the stainless steel wall of the containment structure. Those are the likely places for the heated melted core material to leak out first.

@Karen Exactly! And another point from the white papers on BWR reactors, once fuel damage has occurred, cladding slumps to the floor first, followed by the stainless steel structures used to hold the fuel cells. (Which is a lot of debris) Followed by the fuel pellets themselves. While the surface can be cooled by water, the interior of the debris pile continues to heat.

We haven't really talked about the political struggle going on between TEPCO and the GoJ. A lot of posturing going on here re: liability. You are right, Bev. Let's face it. They are making it up on the fly, agencies are flexing weak muscles while filling out paperwork, and everyone else is trying to read in between the lines.

You are assuming that the concentration of radioactive materials in the water indicates stored spent fuel was the source. But another article I saw today (sorry, cannot find links fast enough) suggested the source could have been direct contact with the fuel inside the reactor. I'm not sure my inference from the article was right but that's what I think it said. I leave that open as a possibilitiy, given the anonymous statement in the NY Times today by one "industry exec" who asserted there is a vertical crack in the reactor vessel of (I think) #2.

They have basically flooded the pools to keep them cool. They water has to go somewhere unless they have added just the amount needed and kept it from overflowing. I don't think they have the ability to judge the proper amount.

I think that that have both been compromised, and rod melting in reactor and pool has occurred. The reactor containment vessel is half in the basement. If this is true, the water from the reactor would have higher levels of radiation because those rods are "hotter", however, the spent fuel pools do contain more rods and are open to the air at this point, or have a roof lying in it depending on which one.

Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant No. 3 in the 24th, in the basement of a building adjacent to the turbine building containing the reactor, the exposure of flooded three inches deep and 15 workers from the atoms in the water operation detected high levels of radioactive materials about 10,000 times that of water in the furnace. That is the machine translation. Water overflowing would end up in the basement.

Ralph what is your line of reasoning for that? The storage pools are located high up in the structure as is the reactor containment vessel itself, as I understand it. There are probably pipes and plumbing all over the place. One person said he felt there was a good chance some of that plumbing had leaked. But not from the SFP necessarily. Explain your reasoning, please.

The water in the basement is more radioactive then the water in the reactor would be. I would say that the storage pools are more of a problem then the reactors.

@Tenzing From the article you posted, "
With this strategy in mind, the company first intended to use the reactors' water pumps. But they were forced to use pump trucks instead from a distance, after high radiation levels were detected near the reactors' pumps." It sounds as if it's going to be difficult or impossible to repair the pumps to restore normal functions even as power is made available. Not good news.

I was talking to someone re: seafood today. The question came up if you have fish or other seafood/life swimming through the concentrated radioactive water and those fish etc. move on and are caught in other areas, does this make pacific seafood russian roulette. What would plutonium do to fish? Would this create a situation of possible highly radioactive seafood randomly showing up?

I just can't stand facebook. It feels like an invasion of privacy even though my facebook name is a pseudonym. I appreciate all of you folks standing side by side with me and watching this disaster unfold and trying to make sense of all the contradictory and incomplete data and reports and upgrading our personal knowledge base together so we can reason about these important events for ourselves.

The 8 radioactive contaminants are listed on this Tepco press release:
www.tepco.co.jp In addition, there's a NY Times article that mentions cobalt and molybdenum in the released water, with some connection to the seawater used for cooling. So if you are enumerating contaminants, more than 8 have been mentioned specifically.

the potential for the worst nuclear disaster in human history is there. but right now, from what we know, most of the evil evil stuff is still contained. so though every day brings us closer, in my opinion we are still not there, and not where chernobyl was. remember, soviets threw nearly a million of people at the thing, burying it and cleaning the worst up..

Thanks to all who intend to sign up for mod duties. For now, we mostly come from the previous incarnation of the Reuters Scribble, so we pretty much have a good feel for the moderation ambience. Let's endeavor to keep up the modding esprit de corps and strive always for the good of all (see what happened in Japan when a few twisted their honored discipline and honor code and brought Fukushima on all the world?) It's all up to us and nobody else to keep up excellence and public interest as top of mind. Let's get with this!

May I ask who is hosting this chat, if any news sources are responsible for it, and will there be any moderation? Just want to see what i'm getting into with this conversation. Thanks.
