@Dennis Tucker Jr I can't confirm but I do recollect Green Peace having something to do with it. But the company who's testing the soil in and around the nuclear plant is independent. Anyway, Pu levels have been monitored since day 1 of this crisis and no alarms have sounded yet. The soil tests are a lot more reliable though.

Extremities (hands and feet) have higher dose limits than the whole body. This is bad, but if it is isolated to the feet, it's not that bad. The femur region has major implications on blood chemistry, so that region would be considered whole body. You'd have to do some radcon math to figure the dose about 2 feet above the floor.

1000 mSv in water in basement. That means each worker can work for 15 mins down there once a year. 250 mSv limit. If you count the time it takes to get there, work must be almost impossible. And if the guy who knows how to do the work best has already been down there, someone with less knowledge must be sent.

The nerds over at ArsTechnica seem to be convinced there's been some degree of criticality, at least in Unit 1. They cite a NISA (not TEPCO) analysis of the water puddle from the #1 turbine building. That report shows high concentrations of not only quick-dissipating I-134, but Cl-38 (radioactive chlorine). To date, that particular report has not been retracted, unlike TEPCO's report on #2.

@gumba Becquels (bq) and Curies (Ci) measure the same thing, that is the number of nuclei emmissions per unit time. With Bq it's the number of nuclei that emit particles or a photon(s) of energy per second, so the numbers tend to be rather large. There's a conversion to Curies and you can look that up. Sieverts and Grays are more nebulous and involve exposures to organic tissue. While Grays and Sieverts can practically be used interchangably. It's very difficult to correlate emitted radiation with physiological effects. I've noticed the reports we are getting are very confusing in that they are giving readings in the field in Sv/t , but giving out the readings for liquids in Bq. (No time needed, it's already in seconds.) That's about all I know. I only minored in physics.

From the Washington Post article someone just posted below. I knew there were penetrations through the reactor vessel for the control rods and instruments, but did not know about "graphite stoppers" for those holes.
"...Unlike in newer reactor designs, the older boiling water reactors at Daiichi are pierced by dozens of holes in the bottom of their reactor vessels. Each hole allows one control rod — made of a neutron-absorbing material that quickly stops nuclear fission inside the reactor — to slide into the reactor from below, as happened when the earthquake shook the plant March 11. During normal operations, a graphite stopper covers each hole, sealing in highly radioactive primary cooling water, said Arnie Gundersen, a consultant at Fairewinds Associates with 40 years of experience overseeing boiling water reactors.
But at temperatures above 350 degrees Fahrenheit, the graphite stoppers begin to melt.
“Since it is likely that rubble from the broken fuel rods . . . is collecting at the bottom of the reactor, the seals are being damaged by high temperature or high radiation,” Gundersen said. As the graphite seals fail, water in the reactor will leak into a network of pipes in the containment buildings surrounding each reactor — the very buildings that have been heavily damaged by explosions. Gundersen said that this piping is probably compromised, leaving highly radioactive water to seep from the reactor vessels into broken pipes — and from there into the turbine buildings and beyond. ..." Is this new information to you guys too?

@gabe Your post is actually really, really alarming... So if the levels grow only 25 times, there WILL be a concern about short-term consumption? Which means we're not really talking about trace amounts. If releases continue at Fukushima, we may soon get a radioactive water warning here on the East coast.

Monitoring for Increased Levels of Radioactive Material in the US as a Result of the Incident with the Fukushima Nuclear Incident in Japan
Summary: As a result of the incident with the Fukushima nuclear plant in Japan, highly sensitive radiation monitors operated by EPA and others are detecting very low levels of radioactive material in the air in the United States. These levels were expected and consistent with estimated releases from the damaged nuclear reactors and are far below levels of public health concern.
Elevated levels of radioactive material in rainwater have also been expected as a result of the nuclear incident after the events in Japan, since radiation is known to travel in the atmosphere. There have been reports received that several states including Pennsylvania and Massachusetts have detected elevated levels of radiation in rainwater following recent precipitation events.
Background
The numbers of the elevated levels of radioactive material being reported in Massachusetts are 79 picocuries (pCi) per liter (one picocurie is a trillionth of a curie). The numbers reported in Pennsylvania range from 40-100 picocuries per liter. Although these are levels above the background levels historically reported in these areas, they are still about 25 times below the level that would be of concern for use as a sole source of water over a short period of time, even for infants and pregnant or breastfeeding women, who are the most sensitive to radiation.
While short-term elevations such as these do not raise public health concerns – and the levels seen in rainwater are expected to be relatively short in duration – the U.S. EPA has taken steps to increase the level of monitoring of precipitation, drinking water, and other potential exposure routes to continue to verify that.
Given the release of radiation in Japan, it was expected that radiation monitors in this country and elsewhere will detect minute quantities of radiation. These monitors are highly sensitive and can detect amounts of radiation in trillionths of a Curie. We expect environmental monitors will continue to detect low levels of radiation in surface waters due to radioactive material in the air. When it rains or snows, the radioactive material is washed to the ground and onto surface waters.

@chris (opinon) I did nt see english version, but I belive the lid you are refering to is the containment lid (not vessel lid) for #4, it is my understanding that they were doing mantaince(probably refueling) and had the contaiment lid off. but do not believe it blew off... if you watch the explosion on #3 the height of the plume and force, I would think #3 suffered trmenous damage to the buiding and mechanical systems, not sure about the contaiment vessel? my guess is the rod pool suffered some damage or/and debrie fill.

I'm a bit confused. I see the relationships between rads, rems, sieverts etc. But how does this relate to the amount of radiation present ie curies, becquerels. Specifically, if you remove 1/2 a radioactive puddle of x sv/hr - what results - 1/2 the sv rate since half the energy in decay was removed?

Did anyone catch the interview on NKH a few minutes ago? An expert was commenting on the video (I believe the one linked above) saying that a crane or something had actually fallen over and likely damaged the rods in (I think) R4. Also, some kind of a containment lid blown off. This was new information to me. Could anyone please elaborate/clarify? Thanks.

Food for thought... "The readings being retracted are not due to miscalculation. If you will check the tides for the last 24hrs you will see that the initial VERY HIGH reading was @ high tide. The second re-reading was taken @ low tide. This style reactor uses a single cooling loop and appears to have a leak in the turbine room. The tides coming in puts positive pressure in this loop and radiation collects. When the tide goes out it places a vaccume on the system pulling vast amounts out to sea.
Tepco will publish samSeems this ples taken @ low tide from now on it seems."Eric Shidler on March 27, 2011, 4:04 PM

TV media in the US is pretty much useless. I realized that between things on 9-11 and the total lack of reporting in WI over the last month. Foreign media and online things like this tend to be the best resources as long as you can sort the junk from the good.

dean, i had a question about modulation and chernobyl, something i read on a physics blog talked about over modulation of the graphite due to the reactor being duel purpose for weapons material production and generating electricity ~ i do not understand what that means to be over modulated. the post is the 4th one down if you want to look ~

Another major shock would finish her. For good. Dr. Kaku believes were already there. (As do I). The thing I was worried about several days ago was the plant becoming so radioactive that the workers can't go near it. I'm afraid that may be happening now. Efficiency of the workers is really poor as of now. Tepco doesn't seem to be able to plan how long something will take (sometimes call v-fac time), that's why everything is always delayed. There's a limit to optimism and I think they should get real. (About a lot of things) My Opinion

@Dean, I watched this expert presentation on CNIC this morning. The man showed the pressure history measured at the reactor since the quake. It was quite clear that the reactor vessel lost pressure within hours. Does not that mean that reactors of this type ought to be shut down, at least until we find out what precisely at the vessel failed?

The JMA "early warning" system is nothing more than an alert to seek cover when the earthquake is already happening! My policy is wait a few seconds to see how bad the shaking is and then head for a doorway, under a desk, or outside if necessary.

depending on the ground motion of any earthquakes.. "if" there is a melted core the debris may be upset by some shaking or in the spent fuel pools some debris on top falling.. keep an eye on the shots of the metal frameworks etc.

about the steam maybe coming from a relief valve... when the reactor scrammed, there is a transient in the steam system going to the turbines and there could have been a relief valve on that system that bled off steam because imagine.. steam was still being produced from the core when the power was lost off site..

I think one very important thing.. the fuel is still contained in the vessels for 1, 2 & 3 and in the canal.. it's still 40 feet deep and there is alot of concrete shielding.. the worst rad levels are up in the air above the reactors.. and that is the safest place for the fuel debris (what every shape they are in) to be

@Dean Just watched a documentary on Chernobyl. Seems they were worried about the molten mass of fuel dripping down through the concrete into pools of water below left from the firefighting operations - speculating that it could set off a massive explosion (which is why they sent in firefighters to pump the water out). Is that situation different in Fukushima? Is physical contact between molten reactor fuel and water from the spraying operations a concern? (link to the documentary here:

Good morning from my end (GMT+8). Great online board, @George Gibb. It's the start of the working week, and I will endeavor to follow as best I can throughout the day.
Big big thanks, @everybody, for keeping up the lively, edifying yet quite civil and very unfoul chatter, and for trying your best to stay on topic, fervently disagreeing but graciously holding back on personal attacks.
Thanks for keeping in mind some best practice points:
* including links of relevant SOURCES especially when flashing or passing forward news or tips
* indicating UTC/GMT timestamps wherever possible, as this is a board that involves running events and time-sensitive info.
Remember: Information is like eggs, the fresher, the better. Stay safe, stay cool. Be rods and pipes and pools that fuel, conduct and store knowledge in a constructive way. Go for clarity always, monitor and radiate nothing but love for each other.

The presence of highly-radioactive water is a serious concern in that it both can and will run off and must be presumed to be doing exactly that, but also because it precludes entry into the places where people have to go in order to get a cooling solution operating and stabilize the situation.
With that said however the early reports of a huge breach ("large vertical crack") in the containment are unlikely to be true. Among other things its damn hard to get a positive pressure reading in a container that has a big crack in it - and the pressure readings are positive and material. You're free to believe that TEPCO has been falsifying those numbers since the beginning, but that's the only explanation that jives with a violated containment, and more-importantly if there was a violated containment all of the water put in would have instantly flash-boiled into steam. We haven't seen anything from these plants that jives with that explanation.

re: radiation exposure. So there are places no one can go at all because they would immediately be exposed to over the 250 limit?

@Ralph Unger It wouldn't be the first time CNN has mistaken information or misquoted Japanese officials by it depends on what it is meant by shift. It could mean early shift.

@NHK Listener : well, radiation effects are not LNT. but this does not mean it is not dangerous. it simply means, some small amounts of radiation can cause the same cancer as a high amount. you cannot foresee it. some of the liquidators and Nagasaki victims are still alive despite their heavy burns. but others that might just have eaten asingle hot cherry, have died of radiation.

@Ralph: No, the reports can both be right.. it just means they're only allowed to do 1 150 mSv shift per year and the rest of the work has to be lower-radiation.

I hope so. Otherwise, it is going to be day laborers. Everybody gets s suit, a bucket and a mop and is told to go in and mop for ten minutes. They will never show up on company records. That is how things were done to clean up hazmat areas in West Germany three decades ago. Let us hope this will be different.

"The owner of the stricken nuclear power complex in northeastern Japan said Saturday that it will hike the radiation exposure limit for its workers at the plant from 100 millisieverts per shift to 150 millisieverts, Japan's public broadcaster NHK reported." It is now 250 mSv per shift.

The allthingsnuclear link above points to a Union of Concerned Scientists posting mentioning that the seals around the doors of the SFPs are air-filled seals, which stop being inflated when the power goes out, and then slowly lose pressure.

@jojo, your putting words in my mouth or extending on what I said. I am not saying they are not withholding data. They likely are. Someone other than greenpeace is pulling readings for that area. They are not sharing them with the group that runs the site with the readings. My point was that it is possible some of the existing stations were wiped out by the tsunami. So a little of both.

This may be helpful as well. "Unlike the cooling systems for the reactor core, the pumps for these pools typically don’t have backup power, so once electricity from the power grid was cut off, the pumps stopped operating.
Once that happened, the heat from the fuel rods began raising the temperature of the water in the pools. Once the water in a pool reached the boiling point, it would begin to boil away and lower the level of the water."
