@Jojo - My concern is twofold. 1) Chernobyl is being used more and more as an argument FOR nuclear energy. 2) Nobody is telling the general public the true story about alpha- and beta-emitters. - Gamma rays are nasty but the real trouble lies in the accumulation of inhaled and ingested radia-active partcles.

@Cup Gotcha. The health risks due to radiation are undeniable; the problem with Chernobyl is that it's so widespread it's impossible to tell how much radiation any one person got, so the nuke industry can just claim "no ill effects". That ship has sailed, we already know the effects.

@Pat - Radioactive Iodine is eliminated from the body, but after it does damage to your thyroid, that is why some people are concerned. In a high enough dosage it can kill thyroid cells. However, the levels of Iodine-133 currently being detected are very, very low and since the half life is approximately 5 days it will dissipate very quickly. No need for those PI pills!

@Pat I think it's that some of the isotopes, like iodine and cessium, mimic good minerals like potassium and the body absorbs them. Then, cause of the rad, they degrade cells. And the radiation like the gamma, is like fissioning your cells. I'm tired, and this is way over-simplified, but maybe that helps?

@Pat - No, they don't. Iodine is taken up by the thyroid and can easily cause thyroid cancer. Cesium is far worse as it mimics potassium and the body absorbs it as such. Know where calcium goes? To the bones. It causes leukemia. No, it doesn't just go away.

@Cup And the UN report doesn't say one way or another what the effects of Chernobyl are. It does point to an increase of leukemia (with fatality rates much higher than thyroid cancer), but says it's inconclusive. But we have decades of evidence pointing to adverse effects to radiation.

Should we really be worried about all this? Shouldn't we follow Wade Allison's lead (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-12860842 ) and embrace radiation instead of running away from it? If no one died because of Three Mile Island and fewer than 50 people died because of Chernobyl, why are we then making ourselves miserable? Doesn't the IAEA's report on Chernobyl represent the scientific concensus? Isn't even plutonium completely harmless to the general public? (http://www.hps.org/documents/plutonium2.pdf ). Why are we wasting our time ignoring the scientific concensus? And if the scientific concensus is that there is virtually no risk to man-made radiation, aren't governments acting criminally by imposing ever tighter radiation standards? What is the scientific concensus on man-made radiation?

@Ralph: I can't imagine how. It's the same people doing it for two weeks and counting - working under extreme stress and probably with very little 'real' rest, adequate nutrition, etc. Couple it with the knowledge that you are on a suicide mission (these guys know the real story), and one starts to tune out. Hence, focus is lost and mistakes are made. Officials say that it'll take weeks or even months before its stable. The human psyche has limits especially when stretched that thin.

I should not have to re-post but.."I have no way of knowing how many days they have before a stainless steel component suddenly cracks, but if it were me, I would be advocating an emergency program to get pure deionzied cooling water back into this stainless steel system ASAP. In laboratory tests in boiling chlorides, cracking of stainless in tensile stress can occur within days- they have at most a few months if they keep boiling sea water in this system and yet another disaster occurs. I am sure there are competent scientists in Japan's nuclear industry and government regulators. I hope they are on top of this threat!"

@dean - From the documentaries I've seen, it mixed with the sand initially to form solid globs as it slid and cooled. Years later, however, condensation was reaching it and causing it to return to a somewhat "oozy" state. I do not know what happened since. That information was current as of '91.

For example, engineers are interested in knowing how seawater damages metals. This information is important in determining the best techniques to use in building ships. An experiment can be done by adding pieces of metal to seawater that contains radioactive chlorine-36. The sodium chloride in the seawater is changed slightly so that it contains radioactive chlorine instead of normal chlorine. As the sodium chloride attacks the metal, its actions can be followed easily. The radioactive chlorine, chlorine-36, gives off radiation. That radiation can be detected by holding an instrument near the experiment. A scientist can find out exactly what happens when the sodium chloride attacks the metal.

Earlier today somebody quoted from arstechnica forum (sp.?) and said that isotope of chlorine is a "demon element" or something. They listed all the decays and radioactivity of each, and said it was awful. I had no context for what was said, however, so can't independently check it.

@Hank I can't offer any clarification on the 138Cl measurement. It looks like TEPCO forgot to scrub it when they scrubbed Cs138. And I think that's been the most frustrating thing about this "accident", the omission of data has made it very difficult to quantify harmful effects and sequence of events.

@Bev - Cl-38. Radioactive chlorine. It has a half-life in the minutes and is only created by fission. It was listed as detected in the water from the turbine room of #1. It was never specifically retracted like #2. I haven't seen any further sample results, so I don't know whether it's real or not.

How are they getting isotopes in the contaminated water of only a few hours if this meltdown was over a week ago?

@Lethbridgean Not necessarily, 26 men "accidentally ingested" plutonium during the Manhattan Project. They were followed closely for negative health effects. After 4 decades, only one had died of cancer. Inhalation is thought to be far more dangerous.

@Tenzing: humans are indeed beautiful. Several of the most humane, wonderful, inspiring people I knew --and looked up to-- as a child invented the original bomb: Bacher (inventor of the trigger), *Feynman* (often referred to as GOD in Pasadena, CA), Sands (a UCS founder). I do think that human intelligence may ensure our destruction, however. We create things we can't control very well. Or well enough, anyway. Imagine a world where the greatest scientists of our time hole up in a remote new Mexico location until they've figured out a plentiful, non-dangerous energy source, e.g. "solar on steroids".

I see the future of the American police state as one in which our government uses technology to track us in a system from which we cannot escape except to live without any of the world's modern conveniences. I see dissent being very easy to control via the simple elimination of a person's digital profile. I see tyranny ahoy. Cheers. :)

@Diane - We are not stuck as a civilization. At least, we don't have to be. All we have to do is to face up to some realities and start employing existing technologies in a much smarter way. A lot of it you can do yourself. For example, we found it easy to bring our electric power use down to 20% of the national average (per person in a household). We also found it financially attractive to invest in a solar PV system. It generates four times more power than we need ourselves. It helps to even out local grid load. It gives an excellent return on investment. Next step is an electric car. Energy independency at the household level is eminently possible. But also at the community level things are not at all bleak. Several towns in our area are investing in wind power and very soon will be largely self-sufficient in electric power. All this can be done. Don't let anyone tell you that it can't.

@Diane maybe if we look at that space between individual that extra cellular matrix that connects every living organism we can collectively effect changes, were doing it right now with every choice we make. Sometimes we can't see the forest for the trees. This lake is less than 70 miles from my front door maybe that has an effect on my perspective. planetoddity.com

The formal/conventional channels of information (pressers, announcements, briefings, etc) are starting to become stale deadbeats. We may have to keep sniffing out alternative yet credible sources (industry, technology, academe, middle mgmt moles that tap into the heart of Tepco) to keep the spark of meaningful information exchange alive. It's time to make it worthwhile to be a true-blue whistleblower. Dig into dirt to find the truffles if we have to.

@Lethbridgean That's great. Mountaintop removal has not only destroyed peoples lives, it has destroyed some of the most beautiful wilderness areas in the world. The attack on the good earth we have inherited for the sake of profit is not only disgusting, but is threatening our species, not to say many many others.

I'm lost. NHK reports that "an increasing number of residents have reportedly returned to their homes in suburban areas surrounding the troubled Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant." However, the Yomiuri Shimbun states: Experts say govt should give more detail in designating evacuation zones. (...) The Yomiuri Shimbun calculated radiation doses based on data from the Fukushima prefectural government. These calculations were made under the premise a person was outdoors continually from March 14 to 4 p.m. March 24.
The estimates showed a person would have absorbed 620 microsieverts of radiation in Minami-Soma, about 24 kilometers from the nuclear plant, over that period. But the number reached 4,000 microsieverts in Iitatemura, about 40 kilometers northwest of the troubled plant.
Four thousand microsieverts far exceeds the 1,500 microsieverts an average person in Japan is exposed to naturally in a normal year.

@ Tensing - BBC Viewpoint - An article not worthy of a scientist or a health professional. Although some of his statements are true, his message is untrue because of what he leaves out. His biggest sin is to downplay the role of alpha- and beta-emitters and the damage they can do when inhaled or ingested. He also doesn't mention that health studies into the effects of radiation exposure come to conclusions that are orders of magnitudes apart. Whatever the reasons for these discrepancies, they constitute a public health travesty. Urgent work on a scientific concensus, free from nuclear industry and military interference, is needed.

The reason Edano says the partial meltdown in temporary, is probably because they made an error. Soon, I expect them to say they need to analyze the data again, do more tests. They could then say later tonight that Tepco made a mistake and there was no partial meltdown, just a full meltdown!

NISA update, morning of 3/28 in Japan
It's the morning of the 28th in Japan, and NISA (Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency) has just given another briefing. The able Hidehiko Nishiyama, always the morning briefing point man for NISA, gave the particulars. We were hoping to stall long enough to get the copy of the documents that accompany this briefing, but they're not available yet so in order to remain timely we'll run what we have... which in all likelihood won't be contradicted by anything in the briefing papers.
We still read them anyway.
Details given this morning: In general, applicable to all three reactor plants which were at power when the quake hit; all will eventually be changed from having fresh water injected to the cores by fire trucks (pumper trucks) as they are now to electric pumps. The fire trucks need to be refueled fairly often, and this arrangement is not necessarily the best. Electric pumps for each plant will be placed in a temporary arrangement, powered by diesel generators. To ensure total separation of the plants, and any event at any one plant, every plant will have its own dedicated portable diesel generator and fresh water pump.
In terms of specific plants, it was deemed a top priority to achieve this setup on No. 2 plant first and this was done at 6:30 PM Tokyo time on the 27th. This plant is still being injected with fresh water containing boric acid. (Nishiyama's exact words were "we're injecting fresh water and we need boric acid on this plant" or something like that.)
Now, to plant specific details and analysis...
No. 1 plant's reactor pressure vessel temperatures are rising again, and fresh water injection rate will be adjusted upward to correct for this. (Last time I saw a new number the feed nozzle temperature was about 204C.) This plant should get its electric water pump and diesel generator on the 29th. TEPCO has added two more fire pumps to the one working the turbine building basement water pool which has developed in order to get this contaminated water into the condenser hotwell.
At No. 2 and No. 3 plants, the condenser hotwells are already full or very nearly so and this water -- which isn't contaminated so far as we know now -- might be simply pumped outside or to sea in order to get the hotwells empty to make room for the water in the basements. Nishiyama's remarks, though, leave some opening as to the plan for No. 3 plant since he indicated they're still deciding what to do with that water.
The cyclical nature of watering the various spent fuel pools, now using the concrete pumper truck and various 'water cannon' vehicles continues as needed, albeit with fresh water now.
We'll be looking for the NISA and TEPCO documents to appear fairly soon, and likely some JAIF status charts a bit later.

If there is a lot of heat still being generated, concrete and sand etc, is useless. They have to cool it down first. Or the heat will just break to covering.

Just heard on NHK that the agriculture minister said they are conducting soil tests and may need to expand the evacuation zone. Wonder if the translation was correct, since just before that he was talking about farm products. Anyone else heard this?

@all 5:10 PM Eastern Slunday 3/27/2011 "We will have to wait for further details. Serious core damage, given the new data? Of course. Core melt? Partial melt, very very likely. Full melt, hard to say. Failure of reactor vessel, or a bottom end penetration (for instruments or control rods) or near the support flange by melting? Possible. Primary containment (drywell and suppression chamber) failure? Virtually assured, and TEPCO is saying just exactly that."

@VeenOui @George Gibb Yes, thanks for that. What I wanted add was the nature of the sarcophagus, such as how long it took to make (7 months+) and that it has large holes in it.

So, they have admitted that there was a partial meltdown in #2 reactor and that the containment is in fact leaking, either gas or water. That's no surprise.

Steam can be invisible, I have put too much weight on the steam levels seen in the morning , cool air causes them to be more visible.
