@Jojo I think we all hope that. What really gets me going is how the "authorities" in Japan can so quickly and easily discount sound scientific evidence of a reactor vessel breach just because no one has a photo of it or no one has actually seen it! To me that would seem to be insanity in action and if so it doesn't bode well for a good outcome. (yes my opinion only).

@Matsuoko, I cannot read the values on the ordinate well. But the professor says that much. The reactor vessels are usually running at 7 MegaPascal. The earliest readings he could obtain for reactor 1 indicated 0.8 MegaPascal at 2:45 on Mar. 12, that is on the day after the quake. He clearly associates the drop in pressure to a loss of coolant in the reactor vessel, owing to ruptured pipes.

@Jay77 I grew up there 60's 70's. It was quite a debate. When they came up with the wildlife refuge, I said What!?, But, I still think it's kinda weird. People don't understand. Fukishima Reactor 3 has MOX as fuel. US and Europe use only upto 1/3 of rods as MOX per reactor. Japan use 50% in some and and are the only country to use 100% MOX. MOX has 5% weapons grade plutonium. In other words the plume at Chernobyl was spectacular. Fukishima's can be a virtual mist, or an almost invisible amount to cause even worse effects.

@dean, i never said that, but all depends on a few things, plutonium by its nature is heavy and will settle to the ground quite quick, if it was one blast then that plutonium will be mostly on the ground, or in the sea, bar what gets wipped up in the wind, but at the moment plutonium in these sorts of numbers is not the biggest worry, it is the the other 2 isotops that pose a bigger threat to the public of japan,

@Pedro Jesus I don't think it's worldwide, it's just naive to think that a company would not try to withhold bad information. For example in the Pu levels: in their press release they say it's possible it's from atomic testing (repeated by CNN news reporter), but in their PDF they clearly admit it's "their" Pu. And then there is the "magic" re-assessment of reactor 2 w/o any explanation whatsoever.

@dean Yes that is my understanding, whereas in the US I understand the maximum removed for fuel rotation is 1/3 of the total core. This is then re assembled with the requisite new fuel and inserted into the core and the reactor re started. I have read several articles (not published papers though) that say that the Japanese Industry as a whole remove and re assemble the whole core with the required new rods then insert into the reactor. At any given time during the refueling process 3x more rods are at risk in Japan.

is the massive upheaval of the road directly behind one of the reactors. Various news sources have said the critical damage was caused by the tsunami, not the earthquake. After seeing this, it is hard to believe that reactors could be built to withstand it. At 1:49

Not sure if this has been posted before. A pretty detailed wikipedia article on what happens when corium is formed and melts through the RPV. Answered my question from yesterday "
the dynamics of the movement of corium in and outside of the reactor vessel is highly complex, and the number of possible scenarios is wide; slow drip of melt into an underlying water pool can result in complete quenching, while a fast contact of large mass of corium with water may result in destructive steam explosion."

@Tenzing I have absolutely no clue. Like I said, I think the coloration is because its dark. And it just happened to pick up a small bit of green. It happens a lot when you try to brighten really dark images. Areas will pick up artifacts of green. I don't think the green part is anything to worry about. I was more interested in the glow in general.

@Matsuoko, this must have taken them that long. Alpha analyses may be technically quite involved. Perhaps they had to send the samples somewhere offsite. @Matsuoko Spent nuclear fuel from normal light water reactors contains Plutonium, but it is a mixture of Plutonium-242, 240, 239 and 238. The mixture is not sufficiently enriched for efficient nuclear weapons, but can be used once as MOX fuel. Accidental neutron capture causes the amount of Plutonium-242 and 240 to grow each time the Plutonium is irradiated in a reactor with low-speed "thermal" neutrons, so that after the second cycle, the Plutonium can only be consumed by fast neutron reactors.

@Matsuoko, in my understanding they must have surveyed the plant premises with a crude detection method first. Remember last week, when the first reports on the neutron "beams" came out? Japanese news reported more than five occurrences recorded at a distance to the reactor buildings of 1,500m. After that survey, they must have collected samples from the hottest sites for detailed analysis and now they have got the results.

@NHK Listener : if pu240 is found, it cannot come from an "unburnt" rod. pu240 is a fission (chain reaction) product.

@VeenOui From what I have seen, TEPCO was hedging on WHERE the Pu was from: I saw news reports (CNN) suggesting it might be from background Pu (atomic testing). Clearly it's from this incident.

@Natalie. That is the 3rd incident of light in that area. More were found on a video of tepco camera shots someone compiled. It is really odd. A spotlight like from a fire truck shining into that area "could" create a light like that if there was enough moisture etc. in the air to create the circle where the light reflects. Otherwise it starts to get into the hmmm. territory. They are only using a concrete boom on one building. We need to figure out what area that is on the tepco cam. That would help sort out what it is. If that is nowhere near the unit they are using the concrete boom it may be something of interest.

"
But that dangerous scenario looked likely to happen when TEPCO later told reporters that radiated water had been found in an area called “the trench” outside the No. 2 turbine building the day before. NISA’s Nishiyama later described the trench to reporters as a deep concrete tunnel used to carry electric cables and pipes for the turbine room. Originally he said the cables and pipes had been laid on the ground, but to prevent accidents they were housed inside this tunnel. At one end of the trench there is 16-meter shaft with an inspection manhole and when the manhole was removed, water was found to have leaked into the trench and risen “to a height of 14.9 meters and is increasing,” Nishiyama said. Radiation readings were taken and found to be more than 1000 millisieverts per hour on the surface—similar to the radiation found pooling in the turbine room, from where it has presumably leaked." full article in Spectrum ieee

Kyodo News: TOKYO, March 28, Kyodo
The government on Monday urged residents of the 20-kilometer exclusion zone around the quake-stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant not to return for the time being.
''It is very likely that anywhere within 20 km of the plant is contaminated and there is a big risk (to human health) at the moment,'' Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told a news conference, stressing that residents should not enter the area before the government gives the green light to do so.

I suspect by "you" you mean me (Markfm) -- something weird in how my posts are going through. Yes, the levels are measurable, but apparently still reasonably small, and TEPCO acknowledges that they are from things happening at the TEPCO site.

There has been no follow-up on the robots, radiation-protective suits, and other gear to help working in hazardous conditions that the media initially reported a few days after the nuclear accident was apparent. Interesting thing coming out of the tepco camera. Even though it is dark, is it really turned off? If you take the image in to Photoshop and bring the levels out, you get a slight green glow. (Which may be because of the camera at night, because that's one of the two colors that come out, green and blue) But it looks like its near one of the reactors. It may just be a play of the image, but I was wondering if anyone had looked at that before.

www.tepco.co.jp TEPCO admits plutonium is from recent incident. " thus those Pus are considered to come from the recent incident." So we can put to bed this is natural radiation, there has definitely been a release of Plutonium from this incident.

Could everyone please abstain from social comments, such as "agree", "nice one" etc. The strength of the Reuters site was that they filtered out all useless comments. Here half of the comments are irrelevant. This distracts from the substance and from those comments that actually contribute something. I hope you now realize what enormous amount of work the Rueters team put into maintaining the blog. They took out all the nonsense. Please. this is not a chat club.

@fiona I don't know, I'd defer to Matsuoko et al. on that. I believe all this radiation in outlying areas is from venting the radioactive gas + explosions(?) from before, but I don't know if that's the same cause of the plutonium.

@VeenOui Been researching the possibility of the oxidation of PuO2. Plutonium oxide can form higher oxides, Pu2O3 for example, so it is possible for it to burn. Could not read the science because the pages were open to subscribers only.
www.nature.com and
www.sciencemag.org I have no idea what it implies here. But it does sugest plutonium oxide can be subject to further oxidation under the right circumstances.

NYT article: Tainted Water at 2 Reactors...
Asked on Sunday at a news conference what was the company’s projected timeline for emerging from the crisis, Sakae Muto, a vice president for Tokyo Electric Power, said, “We don’t have a concrete schedule.”
Mr. Muto declined to answer a journalist’s question about a possible worst-case outcome, saying, “The important thing is to keep cooling the reactor and prevent the current situation from getting worse.”

i was in Haiti at the time of the earthquake there, about 30 miles from the epicenter. Got home--USA--5 days later. I was "shook" from the experience for weeks afterwards. i can only imagine the state of shock that people are in in Japan. Hibakusha is the word i think for victims the atomic bombings. Now there are new Hibakusha. i hope we can all take time to send energy, hopes, wishes, to all those who suffer from this.
