@All When I was watching the helicopter in action and realized that it was more for show than anything. I remembered watching a documentary (I watch them all - its a disease i think) about sky scraper fires and remembered these specialized trucks so I fired out some emails to TEPco - US Navy - couple of local people in japan with the suggestion that they use these vehicles. I would like to make the first recommendation... meretisa.. could you get someone to draft a letter which we can all sign that is to be sent to the japanese ministry of nuclear safety and others like IAEA ,,, that sends our strongest demand that the workers in the facilities be given better quarters, food, showers, places to sleep other than on the floor over a lead blanket... it's inhumane what they are doing.. 12 hour shifts,, no showers for days, I can't believe it

An idea--take it or leave it: What about filtering your ideas through the UC Berkeley Nuclear Engineering Department to get some sort of legitimacy and buy-in before approaching other officials/politicians? I only mention this because I see they have a forum being moderated by one of the nuclear engineering staff: D. Chivers
www.nuc.berkeley.edu Forum=http://www.nuc.berkeley.edu/forum/218 Berkeley is the home of many many Nobel prize-winning scientists and not likely a bastion of government secrecy (I used to live across the street).

@all. This sounds like there will be plenty of tasks to track down data, news stories, old posts and photos. I think we can keep plenty of people busy who don't feel they have industry specific type skills.

De-lurking again. Hi all! it looks like at least some of the media is taking notice again. Anderson 360 was scathing in it's assessment of what is going on...making note of the fact that Tepco and the GoJ are behind the 8 ball and urging the global community to get involved. There's hope! I'll see if I can find a transcript.

@Dean, there are a number of multi-use document formats to write things up. Wiki has a members only format option so only approved people can write. The best way I have seen crowdsourced documents drafted was someone starts, everyone adds onto the document and then it is edited down to the good relevant points and someone does a final edit into a nice organized document.

I'm concerned about the soil/plants as well. In the meantime, I am stocking up on bottled water and have advised some friends/family to do the same (only to be told I'm paranoid and crazy lol) But there's only so much bottled water one can buy, and if the plants we eat become contaminated, I shudder to think of the consequences. I may be overly concerned, but I can't help it, I have 2 young children. I cannot imagine how parents in Japan are coping right now.

@Meretisa It is possible that other countries would simply not buy the US grain, which would cause prices to skyrocket. The poor of course would be the first to be affected.

I know it's too soon to put a sarcophagus over the plants in Japan, however, it is possible to put a large tent over it to keep the radioactive particles from leaving the vicinity? Or, alternatively, should we be thinking about erecting a huge tarp over the midwest and other farming areas in the US and Canada?

@NervousinNJ Those reports are slightly dubious. The EPA limit is not intended to be applied to short-term releases, but as a limit to be applied over the lifespan of a human (i.e. above this level is bad if it lasts for your entire life). Also, they were published in 1974...almost as old as the reactor itself >_<. To put it in another way, anything over 0.1 Bq / liter would be over the limit.

@Bobby @all
blogs.forbes.com Not sure how credible this source is, but according to this guy, the EPA said that the levels of radiation found in PA rainwater were actually above safe limits for drinking water. But they say that would only be of concern to health over th long term, and rain is a short term event. My question: What if the plants continues to spew radiation at current (or higher rates), and we see a prolonged rain event here in the U.S. (quite typical this time of year)? Would the levels for drinking water become harmful then???

A recap about the amounts of fuel at Fukushima, from comments on a Guardian story
www.guardian.co.uk Science Insider noted yesterday:
The Daiichi complex in Fukushima, Japan … had a total of 1760 metric tons of fresh and used nuclear fuel on site last year, according to a presentation by its owners, the Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco). The most damaged Daiichi reactor, number 3, contains about 90 tons of fuel, and the storage pool above reactor 4, which the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC’s) Gregory Jaczko reported yesterday had lost its cooling water, contains 135 tons of spent fuel. The amount of fuel lost in the core melt at Three Mile Island in 1979 was about 30 tons; the Chernobyl reactors had about 180 tons when the accident occurred in 1986.
That means that Fukushima has nearly 10 times more nuclear fuel than Chernobyl.
It also means that a single spent fuel pool – at reactor 4, which has lost all of its water and thus faces a release of its radioactive material - has 75% as much nuclear fuel as at all of Chernobyl.
However, the real numbers are even worse.
Specifically, Tepco very recently transferred many more radioactive spent fuel rods into the storage pools. According to Associated Press, there were – at the time of the earthquake and tsunami – 3,400 tons of fuel in seven spent fuel pools plus 877 tons of active fuel in the cores of the reactors.
That totals 4,277 tons of nuclear fuel at Fukushima.

ZAMG site "Because of the numerous incoming data of the CTBTO stations in Japan, California, Alaska and Russia, it was the ZAMG possible source strengths of the substances iodine-131 and cesium-137 to assess for the first days of the accident. These estimates are uncertainties, just so only on the order of magnitude. According to our estimates, we are moving on from iodine-131 emissions in the order of 10 17 Bq per day out of, as well as cesium-137 releases between 15 and 5 5 10 10 16 Bq per day. Extrapolated to the duration of the accident are obtained for these fleeting isotopes sums that are comparable to the nuclear catastrophe at Chernobyl." .... Maybe my guess was not that far wrong?

@borrrden @Jojo The LNT model is used because of lack of conclusive data to disprove it. Although it becomes unreliable at certain levels it is still the model that predicts the highest risks involving radiation exposure, which means, it is the safest model to use. It doesn't mean it is the most accurate. Funny as it may seem, Japanese authorities are far more conservative than international authorities. The usual limit of exposure under nuclear crisis is 100mSv in Japan (it has been temporarily updated to 250mSv to allow the Fukushima 50 to work under the extreme circumstances present in the nuclear plant) whereas international limit is 5 times higher, 500mSv. The reliability of the LNT model is highly contested around the world by scientists, but since there is still no evidence it may be wrong (because statistical data analysis is unreliable for long term, low dose exposure) it is still the safest one to use. There is no wrong or right here. Only different context.

This could have HUGE ramifications. Let's explore options in how to clean up small decontaminations like the US and others and then we can extrapolate out to include Japan. I think that with the deposition of cesium globally now we need to look to the longer-term effects and answers.

@George Gibb: IDEA - The current global economic slump might be turned around if there was a global consensus to decommission each and every Nuclear Power Plant on Earth. Think of the impact on the construction industry alone. Just a thought thanks for listening :) blog.mlive.com This concept might work rather well in Japan considering the engineering wonders of the Kansai Airport cellar.org

@Meretisa If the American midwest is contaminated, it would shut off US exports of grain, and affect the globe.

@borrrden OK, I'll take that. Now, if the EPA wanted to, they could extrapolate it to the Chinese by factor in heights, weights, diet, age, etc. :)

@Nancy They are HUGE.... I don't know if this will be enough to tumble the company- it will surely make them come out with "new" energy quick though.

@Gordon It is possible that a year from now, we'll be talking about starvation rather than radiation per se. That's what I am trying to assess.

Hmm betting against power companies. What about GE stock? They are in more than a little hot water these days between the reactor flaws and not paying any US taxes.

Aww man, i just saw maybe a tweet, don't know if it's real expressing "sorry world, ashamed of my country" I just want to say no one is Japan should feel ashamed because of what has happened. We are just rightfully concerned and we are just trying to help by watching and being observant and not turning our backs on you in this crisis.

@Jojo @Pedro Jesus Each of you is right on one point about the EPA report. Pedro is right in saying that it won't work on the Chinese population (the report says in the beginning that all of the numbers assume a population similar to that of the U.S. in so and so year) and Jojo is right that it is LNT, meaning that you could apply the numbers to as little as you want.

@Nancy If it's contained, the food wont get contaminent on it from alpha. Otherwise, it is not a living organism whose dna and cell structure can be changed by gamma rays. Think of it like a microwave oven. I think. flame away, others

@Nancy Yeah, it's carefully controlled. Nuetrons are an anomoly outside a reactor. There are some sources in the universe. But they have a short half-life, decay to proton and an electron.

@Gordon ZAMG has been estimating 20-50% of Chernobyl a few days ago. Their models have validated to slightly underestimate iodine and cesium.
