@James Ward: Unbelievable re: threshold of dosimetry moniter. "Of particular concern is the runoff at reactor No. 2, which has risen to within about three feet of spilling out of an outside shaft. Radiation levels in the water are at least 1,000 millisieverts an hour—four times the level emergency crews at the site are allowed to experience in a full year. Those levels may be higher still, but authorities say 1,000 millisieverts is the upper limit of their measuring devices."

@Sky - They are basing that on 1,000mSv/hour. The actual dose has been determined by many to be far higher than that. Somewhere around 3Sv/hour based upon the lab testing of the water. The on-site equipment pegged out at 1Sv/hr.

i'm upset by workers conditions, but confused too. How many hours can they stay before reaching their maximum dose? It varies by location worked I suppose and by protection worn. Since they're sleeping onsite with 8µSv, don't they have fast turnover and get sent home quickly? Or are they voluntarily OD'ing?

Also, the FoxNews article is very weak on quantitative data where it says the water is "four times more radioactive than is safe for workers". For HOW LONG, FoxNews clowns? @Karen Warren I don't think so. The expert was from nuclear non-proliferation. MOX was originally sold as a utopian golden future where human activities were all fuelled by MOX. It also was going to make your children safe by reducing the quantity of weapons-grade plutonium. That this guy came from the salesman end of this was significant.

Fukushima Farmer Takes Life. QUOTE: "A very sad item (in Japanese) in the Asahi this morning. A 64-year-old cabbage farmer from Fukushima has killed himself, apparently after being told by the government that he wouldn’t be able to sell his crop because of fears of contamination from the nearby Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant. The man had been a highly dedicated farmer, growing a prized organic cabbage. For years, he’d been particularly careful about keeping toxic chemicals out of his cabbages, because they were consumed by elementary school children. The farmer had lost his home and storage facility in the quake, but he had preserved his crop and was keen to sell it. His family makes it clear they blame ‘nuclear power.’"
the-diplomat.com
It’s yet another dimension to the tragedy unfolding in Japan, and a hint of the problems that await TEPCO.
Meanwhile, in another item involving cabbages, thieves in Saga prefecture have reportedly made off with 1200 heads of cabbage. I guess it was a matter of time before we saw a crack in the astonishingly orderly Japanese response to this crisis, but who would have thought it would be over something like this?

ooooooooo my brain just told me an idea for permanent covering,,,,, after we take the debris all off the tops of the buildings.. we go to where the top of the containment concrete is after figuring out if there is a building leak.. and that is where we built the permanent top over the reactor buildings.. sort of like a CONCRETE SHIELDED CAP. with venting capabilities through the HEPA filters, inside would be measures to keep the fuel stable, perhaps sand over the fuel for glassification, boron, or other material. If there are holes in the building that are identified maybe we could fill those areas with a polymer of some sort that would glob into the hole and seal it off...

VOICE OF GLOBAL CITIZENS FOR NUCLEAR SAFETY
DRAFT 3-29-11
• Draft a letter to the Japanese ministry for nuclear power safety to demand immediate changes to working conditions, shifts, personal sleeping quarters, food, shower clothing and for the workers at the Fukushima nuclear facilities.
• demand that all workers, also the temps, will receive a numbered id-card, encoding the duration they worked at the plant and the total absorbed dose at discharge, that their names and health histories be recorded with their doses in a data bank accessible to health care professionals, and that they will receive free health care for the rest of their lives.
• Collect names of people from the scribble/FB/WIKI web sites listen their name used in the room, their specialty or areas they can help, professional engineers (mechanical, civil, nuclear, operations), former nuclear operators, graphics, etc.
• Establish FB connection, scribble, wiki, or other sites that can host special teams for research.
• Establish SKYPE conference number to allow meetings to be held where all can be on the phone
• Draft charter for the group and define general objectives
• Draft letter to the NEI, NRC, DOE, IAEA, or other organization or health organizations showing expression of interest to utilize our specialties to assist in the efforts to bring resolution to the nuclear crisis in Japan
• Form teams to develop
o Chronology of events
o Data, graphs, photos, videos, etc to assist in development of research areas
o Ideas to treat air/steam/vapor that is released from the facilities for pressure control
o Ideas to treat water prior to discharge to the ocean
o Ideas to use existing facilities for shielding to house equipment /personnel
o Ideas to cover spent fuel pools or areas on the main floors of buildings to reduce spread of contamination
o Ideas to remove the debris from the tops of reactors and store in metal containers for disposal
o Think tank/brainstorming ideas for immediate problem resolution
• Develop a direct link with information sharing capabilities to NRC, IAEA, DOE, INTERNATIONAL HEALTH organizations etc. we want to share what we have to get what we need
• Meet to develop ideas to forward to our misc groups like NRC, IAEA, DOE, etc.

@openmind I would as well. I believe that if there was an explosion like the R3 blast, any exposed fuel rod would've been split open at the air/water interface location due to the pressure differential.

In this letter you plan to write, there should be the deright mand that all workers, also the temps, will receive a numbered id-card, encoding the duration they worked at the plant and the total absorbed dose at discharge, that their names and health histories be recorded with their doses in a data bank accessible to health care professionals, and that they will receive free health care for the rest of their lives. cara.. our earlier brainstorm idea was to pick a common building based on plant conditions and use that building as a water holding pool.. all waste waters go to it and it's used as a pool from which to filter and pump cooling/covering water to the other facilities and to itself... then.. the common discharge line from that building will go through a radioactive waste water treament portable system then out to the ocean

whispering once again because I'm very bashful @all I have a request/idea. Because there are so many brilliant intellects and hearts communicating here can we pool our resources and create a discussion based on how we can effect a positive change in the way Nuclear Energy is regulated (including construction and location of sites) from a global perspective and the possibilities/ideas about what seems to be the inevitable entombment of Fukushima Plant 1. I do believe we are living in what may become a turning point in history.

I would also like to help, though don't have a scientific background, more a liberal arts kind of girl. Can we have the site here dedicated to our purpose and then the other site mentioned for more administrative concerns? Just wondering, keep up the great work everyone!!!

The scribble parser is apparently looking for a string of characters preceded by a space and with a recognizable URL following it. If you precede it with a series of periods it will not pick up the start of the URL correctly. Leave whitespace around it.

George: When I «ayed» Sin I was thinking: take all the speculation and theorizing to the other site where we can debate ideas and focus this page on clean, clear and factual information. I think it would improve the quality of this page while all the debate could still continue on another site, so we don't clog this one with confusing and sometimes colliding or divergent news of the situation. And on the other hand the good ideas from the debate would not be dispersed and forgotten.

JOJO - Good idea, and there is already a website that is doing that. You might want to look at what he has done and see if there is an opportunity to exploit that work and save time by avoiding duplication. The site was pinned at the top here for a few days but it isn't anymore. I saved the link:

I think this blog is still a great place for updated news. Lots of links at the top. Lots of posts throughout the day. "secret" is not really such, but you absolutely don't want people playing havoc with something that has such potential. The media and others have vested interests in keeping some of this info private. Until it's compiled I can see why it should be kept a tad close to the heart so to speak.
by karronna at 3/30/2011 3:38:53 AMdocument.write( LiveBlog.ConvertServerTimeToLocalTimeFriendlyString( "3/30/2011 3:38:53 AM" ) )9:38 PM yesterday

@Really? They aren't being secret at all, they advertised to all. It's actually a place where those who wish to be active in their efforts to centralize versus this public blog which had a different purpose.

@ Marie Rich It's become very hard to find good information in response to updated news here. It seems to me that the mission has changed completely. Too bad, that was why the original Reuter's blog was so successful. Plus, "secret" anything is a big, giant red flag to me. No thank you.

@Nancy That's a great idea. This is a good site because people already know about it from Reuters; people that aren't on now will have no idea where everyone went. FB for groups and then post results back here in terms of progress (because there might be an expert that is a new user on this site).
