@es I did but the smoke was supposedly from an active power panel in the turbine building of a unit in cold shutdown. That doesn't apply to any reactor at Daiichi. I think it's a typo. CNN just said the same thing about ' a plant down the road'.

@Vasra The round object visible in the first bib picture and the three small zooms to the right is the steel containment vessel. Most of the steam rising from the building comes from around that object. If you look at the thermal pictures, it is evident that the heat sources outside the spend fuel pool are at exactly the position this round structure is in. Compare the form of the object with the other two pictures, showing it once from above and once when a similar reactor in the US was in construction.

Just watched the Arnie Gundersen video posted by vasra. He is one of the voices I recall from early on in this situation expressing major concern when other experts were saying things were retrievable. To me, it seems evident that the situation is FUBAR. By way of a quick check-in here, what is considered the worst case and best case scenarios assuming that they cannot cool the reactor cores/spent fuel ponds and that large amounts of radiation are leaking all over the place?

@ vasra Recap of Arnie Gunderson's comments from link fairewinds.com (to the best of my ability and apologies for any errors):
---Plutonium is difficult to detect because it doesn't give off a gamma ray -- gives off alpha particle
---One micro-gram of plutonium can cause lethal cancer
---Believes plutonium is coming from fuel pool in Unit 4 because it's scattered on the land on site and mostly likely way to volatilize P is by fire or violent...reaction
---All 4 units will have plutonium because Uranium 238 absorbs a neutron and becomes plutonium
---Believes plutonium will be found in more than 5 areas outside
---Trenches outside of nuclear containment have enormous amounts of radioactive water
---Radioactivity in water is over 100 REM per hour (stand near it for 3 or 4 hours and you receive a lethal dose of radiation)
---Thinks this radioactive water is leaking into the ocean
---Core damage still minimized by TEPCO
---Three Mile Island reactor without water for 10-12 hours and ran for only 3 months before accident so very little decay heat;
---However, Fukushima reactor ran for 4 years and had enormous amount of decayed heat and was uncooled for many days. More decayed heat plus very little cooling means damage inside core 70-80%
which means radioactive slag at very least damaging seals...at worst gradually eating its way thru and meltdown possible
---saltwater + hot water = corrosion of vessels likely
---Large quantities are going to continue to leak in and out of containment and doesn't see how they're going to be stopped in the short term

NISA official announcement about the high level of radioactivity of Iodine in the seawater and how it is not harmful:

@George Gibb Great site you have created here... One of the things that makes it work so well is 1) it is international, as so many of us are ignorant to others cultures and laws... 2) it is not age driven... knowlege is gain by books, and age... they say if your not an Enstin by 8 years old you won't be because society shape the mind.. 3) younger people present ideals that older ones woopen 2 uld write off because of "having been in the system so long" this site has really been something unique..

That iodine rise though should be a significant concern. I thought they were asserting that #2 wasn't being worked yet, only #1 water being removed -- either #1 water is actually pretty hot and they decided to just dump into the ocean or there's a significant new leak to the sea from somewhere.

[Jo l'indien back (but still at work...)] Spraying resin can seem to be a good idea as it prevent dust from going out. But it also would also prevent from spraying water on the spent fuel pools, so I guess this cannot be done on the reactor buildings but only on radioactive debris all around the place.

@Matsuoko IF we can trust that all Daini units are in cold shutdown, the risk there, even in worst case, would hopefully be much lower. i really don't like the news about radioactive water from #5 and 6 and the fire in daini. they might be hiding something. you have to consider that the tsunami might have affected much more systems than believed. there maybe more failures than revealed and even more to come. salty water ruins everything sooner or later.

It seems this Japan disaster blog has been dominated by the nuclear crisis, rightfully so, but I am surprised I have not heard much about the third major country to lose a great percentage of their grain production(India and Pakistan). I am afraid that in the next few years food prices and starvation will be a much bigger worldwide problem. I can not even begin to think of the effects if contamination manages to ruin any great amount of foreign (non-Japanese) food stocks like some of you have brought up.

@Matsuoko About the discharge water radioactivity :
www.gmanews.tv . "Seawater samples were also collected daily at a location 30 m from the common discharge point for Units 5 and 6.
These results also show an increase in the radionuclide concentrations on March 26. The seawater samples collected on March 27 show as well a decrease of the radionuclide concentration." So, it may have been rehash of older news? I didn't catch the whole NHK newscast.

@Matsuoko With probably 30,000 dead, and hundreds of thousands forced to start over after losing everything, who is going to buy the replacements for all of the cars lost in the quake/tsunami? How is Japan going to replace the farming areas that may never recover from being overrun by the tsunami and irradiated by the destroyed Fukushima reactors? Finally, where are they going to get the money to replace all that has been lost since the 9.0 quake? While I applaud your hopes and dreams for a recovering Japan, I don't think they're any more realistic than the tanker idea being discussed.

@Matsuoko: (Jo l'indien, but at work need to use some other login): cloth seems pure fantasy, tanker is realistic: a small tanker can use the plant harbor; it would not be the first time in history that nuclear waste is sank under sea... On-topic - The Japanese and US economies are very strongly linked, and to an extent tri-linked with China. The US economy has a very strong impact on the rest of the world (that will change in about 5-10 years as we become relatively irrelevant). It's not as simple as you make it out to be. Off-topic: Haven't played New Vegas. Didn't even bother with any add-ons for #3 because it pissed me off they essentially split the game in half and then charged more for the rest of it. I think I've grown tired of opening boxes for loot.

@Matsuoko - That's the broken window fallacy. The buildings, roads and vehicles which have been destroyed represent a destruction of wealth. That wealth will have to be replaced via other wealth. The money to pay for that reconstruction doesn't come from thin air.

@Hank Scorpio : i do not agree. there will be no great impact, maybe on the contrary. have you seen all the ruined cars in the tsunami ? i think they lost more cars than lives. they need to replace all these cars ..... they have to rebuild so much .... lots of money to earn there. sorry, i do not want to seem sarcastical but that's the way economy works.

I think a lot of people are vastly underestimating the effect this disaster is going to have on the world economy. The impact on vehicle production will not be limited to the Japanese manufacturers because almost every single manufacturer uses Japanese parts to one degree or another. This might be the straw that breaks the camel's back of the so-called economic recovery. I'd pay attention to the coming G20 meeting in China. I expect China to maneuver for a so-called breadbasket currency as the global standard and the removal of the US dollar from that role.

Here's how it will be: they will buy an old tanker from the Chinese and will fill it with radioactive water and then cover the reactor with a special (special?)cover, a tanker will sink in the middle of the ocean. It is the job

nothing much, #2-#3 leaking steam, #1 temp rising, #5-#6 area discharing oddly high radioactivity to sea (cause unknown). Tepco boss hospitalized for stress. A bit of word clashing about whether to scrap all 6 reactors (gov stance) or only #1-#4 (tepco stance). A "stabilizing crisis" is the expression of the day, again.

News round up for 30.3 10:30 UTC :
- #1 reactor temp rising, pressure stabilized, active steam not being release manually
- #2 reactor temp/pressure not chaing, even though water being pumped. Leakage suspected via broken PCV ventilation
- #3 as number #2
- Tepco webam still shows steam release from the NPP site
- Very high radioactive release in the water from the southern #1-4 discharge channel to the sea
- Highest measured water release for northern discharge channel from #5-#6 so far. Cause/source unknown. Tepco trying to find out
- Asahi reports workers getting really tired/stressed out. Many of them are "irreplaceable" due to skill/experience
- Minister of industry recommends scrapping all 6 reactors. Tepco says scrapping #1-#4 is enough
- NHK: #2 & #3 are very likely to be leaking radioactive steam. Reactors #1-#3 have partially or fully molten fuel rods that are escaping material into the PCV and thus, possibly via the steam

Good Morning this is a Reuters story from 3hrs ago - I slept late - was an 'Instant Radiation Remover' invented whilst I slept ??? "TOKYO, March 30 (Reuters) - Tokyo Electric Power , the operator of Japan's crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex, said it will sound out the opinions of the government and local residents on whether to continue operating the plant's No. 5 and No. 6 reactors, as well as the companion Fukushima Daini plant.
Tokyo Electric Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata had said the Daiichi plant's other four reactors, which have been emitting radiation after suffering damage from a devastating earthquake and tsunami, would be scrapped.
The Daiichi No. 5 and 6 reactors and the Daini plant have been safely shut down. (Reporting by Kiyoshi Takenaka; Editing by Edmund Klamann)

@d_news - What a joke. They have an obvious water leak and they're blaming an air leak? I'm completely confident in saying that partially melted fuel has, in one place or another, breached the RPVs of #s 2 and 3. It's completely and blindingly obvious. The side-breach I mentioned earlier would easily explain why the water levels remain consistent but below the top of where the fuel used to be. OBVIOUS.

Just in case anyone was wondering, I believe the reason we're not seeing high temps at the bottom of the RPVs of reactors 2 and 3 is because the corium did not drop to the bottom. I recall reading an article a few days ago that described it as floating on the top of the water surface and breaching through the side of the RPV.

De disappearance of TEPCO CEO to a hospital for vague health problems is a typical scenario in Japan often used by scandal tainted politicians. They let themselves be admitted to hospital and a succession is arranged. Afterwards they re-appear, completely healthy of course and will no longer be held accountable. Depending on age, they will enjoy their retirement on the golf course or re-start a political career. I guess we will soon see Shimizu on the golf course, relieved of his TEPCO duties.

I KNOW THIS IS OLD< BUT NEW TO ME Shanghai, March 19 (IANS) Two men in Shanghai have been charged with spreading rumours about nuclear radiation from the Fukushima plant in Japan having reached China.
A man surnamed Wu posted on a social networking website a message that said nuclear pollutants had arrived in the city from the damaged power plant, police said.
Another man, surnamed Yin, helped spread the rumour on his microblog and via instant messages, Shanghai Daily reported Saturday.
An official said their behavior had breached the public security law and they received 'administrative penalties' for their act.

@ariadne In the atmosphere, radiation does not follow an inverse-square law. It travels in plumes. It hits some areas harder than others.

@inCalifornia, half life is the time it takes for half the radioactive isotopes to decay into regular iodine. So, after 8 days you will have half as much radioactivity.

(2) All records containing analyses of measurements of radiation referred to in paragraph (1) above; and
(3) All records relating to the criteria and or protocols used for the conduct of the radiation measurements and or analyses described in paragraphs (1) and (2) above.

One of the larger questions we should be asking, and demanding answers to is why hasn't the IAEA stepped in to assist The Japanese with equipment (IF what they say is true, and they don't have the ability to measure over 1k, and can't get Pu readings in 24 hours) these seem to be easy solutions. It would do two things: force the Japanese to report accurate readings in a timely fashion, and/or give them the ability to do so. At the very least, they would no longer have antiquated equipment as an excuse to withhold vital data.

@Bobby 1: I used to be an idealist. Now, I am a realist. It's all corrupt and I've seen it happen over and over - everything from the SEC to the FDA to the Federal Reserve, and the list goes on. It's all about the $$$, unfortunately... the innocent get slaughtered. Cold, hard fact. The world is a nasty place especially for nice folks like yourself. The Japan crisis has really opened my eyes. It's never the obvious; it's always something else.

@Bev Could it have been the case that sensitive lab equipment might have required maintenance and fine tuning before being used to deliver accurate readings? It was a 9.0 earthquake after all. I can imagine a lot of lab equipment failing after that mess. Plus the power shortages. There's a lot of variables that we do not know of.

@Marie I would be shocked if that was the upper limit of their measuring capabilities. Remember they also told us it took ten days to measure the Ur and Pu in soil samples. Equipment has been available for many years to do spectography and have those levels within 24 hours. Standard equipment here in the states. In Japan too I suspect. They like to postpone bad news as long as possible.
