@ Grizzly Perhaps, although no numbers in the article from greenpeace. Found this piece at the NYT "Radiation's Enduring Afterglow" ---- "Early in the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan, neighbors were informed with absurd precision that the radioactivity in a liter of their drinking water had risen to the equivalent of 1/88th of a chest X-ray. One day last week the air in Tokyo registered 0.155 of a microsievert an hour — another chest X-ray, if you were confined for a month at that level. Though stretched to the point of meaninglessness, the analogy is meant to soothe — balm for a spirit burdened by a century of living uneasily with radiation. "

sorry did it again -- this factory was leathal service piping - product kills in 24 to 48 hours, no known anidote... during construction we ordered the weld wire for piping connections not only to code, but had several extra test profomed... durnig the last month of construction we became aware that the test had been falsified (still have origninal papers with blue ink) operating press was appr 3500 psi, with sever cyclic temp. (again product was deadly with in 24 -48 hours..) due to the chemical mature of the product the piping system would have failed eventually due to the lack of the proper amont of molybdenum and other chemical issues. it was only by chance we learned the wire was NOT as certified by the manufacture. During the pending law suit, we had to rebuild the facility, in discovery the document provide to us showed over 900 lbs. shipped to the US, mostly this product would only be used in a very "serious piping system" due to the cost of certification. The manufacture (or know one) was required to "recall" this wire... our documents were blacked out as to who else may have purchased the remain wire.. we only bought apprx 100 pounds... it is unfortunate to say but we do have "safety and Regs" but if you are in the business... its scary to see how people "look" the other way... WE DO NOT!!!... sorry this go messed up, i am not a blogger.. just like learning and seeing what you have to say

From GreenPeace: "As we found out today, the radiation levels are high in Fukushima city -- our measurements confirmed levels that have been reported in newspapers and by the government -- in some places so high that you would get your "maximum annual dose" (if you believe in such things) in about 8 days. It's a bit strange to see people biking and going about their business."

It brings up a question I've been wondering about since looking at the denphone graphs linked above. On the 21st and again into the 23rd there is a doubling of the norm in the graph. Was that delay in radioactivity reaching Tokyo or did something happen on the 23rd that spiked it so much it still hasn't fallen off?

@all Cal Coast News.com An open letter to Sam Blakeslee "I flew to Singapore for a week to help them. These are thoughts now, about California, coming back home.
Flying back over the green hills of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties from San Francisco, you think ”We don’t even have 160 miles between us and Diablo.” That is the distance between Tokyo and Fukushima’s Daiichi nuclear plant that now has four reactors in partial meltdown and thousands of spent fuel rods in empty cooling ponds seeping and belching radiation directly into the air and the seawater. The government acknowledges this will likely continue for weeks and months to come. And, the threat of full meltdown of one, or more, of these four reactors and/or the cooling ponds for spent fuel is not ruled out yet."

@Dean, I believe the future of nuclear power will depend on what they used to call the closing of the fuel cycle. When I was a kid, proponents of nuclear power promised a fuel cycle that would use up almost all fissible material; only tiny remnants were supposed to be stored molten into glass deep underground. Then, the capacities for reprocessing of spent fuel rods could never be developed sufficiently. The process turned out to be way more polluting than thought (some call the Irish Sea on which the UK reprocessing plant near Sellafield is located the Radioactive Sea). Fast breeders to use the reprocessed fuel never really worked. After 40 years, we are left with storage pools bursting from the seams with spent fuel, a circumstance that contributed in no small way to the current crisis in Japan. If we cannot find acceptable ways to dispose of the waste, the end of nuclear power is not going to be far off.

tenzing.. that article is the bare truth and to compound the problem, years ago the Department of Energy said.. they would have a facility to store the spent fuel in a repository and it was built with alot of controversy from the residents of nevada. the facility basically was ready for certification to hold the waste from the commercial reactors but, things like changes in the house and senate and presidents, along with a strong opposition by nevadans.. a court ruled that it would not be used yet.. then recently the Obama administration said.. we will close yukka mountain..

don't know how to link... article is on MSNBC.COM Japan nuclear plant worker recalls narrow escape.... but standard procedure is an immediate "incident review" due to situtation, "immediate" is a vauge word.. but this info both employee exposure and #3 enviroment conitions could be helpful in trying to acertain condition of the equipment.. also some one wrote back could be prv (safety feature) which could be quite possible... interview with workers would help to know if that was what happened..

I saw on NHK where they said they are using pumps to remove water from the turbine rooms and pumping it into a chamber beside it called the condensation chamber. Any thoughts about that? Also, this article
www.guardthe first time I heard of the workers employed ian.co.uk has an interview of a worker present during the earthquake in the turbine room of reactor number 1, in which he states " was in the turbine room next to reactor No 1 when the earthquake hit. "I couldn't stand," he said. "The window above my head shattered and parts of the ceiling fell in."

In light of the chemical and radiologic analysis published by Tepco of the contaminated water those poor fellows were standing in (1.5m deep "puddle"!), the "expert" on CNN should be ashamed of himself. His statement is easily refuted by Tepco's own admission.

@fitter, "did anyone investigate cause of "smoke/steam????" Afaik normal operation doing a reactor scram is to open a valve dumping some pressure, could have been what the workers experienced. My guess is that most people would be scared in such a situation, and some valve opening letting out high pressure steam would not help.

@sims : Co60 can only exist where free neutrons are present. the only place with free neutrons is the reactor vessel. the vessel, if not damaged, does not "wash out" its Cobalt60. if so, the vessel would not survive many years. free Co60 must come from a breaching vessel. it does not say where the breach is, and it does not say if it is a complete breach, but it says in any case the vessel is damaged.

have been folowing for days, great site.. 30 years in high pressure industrial piping/hazmat trianing... point of intrest in the lack of info... was just reading article about "traped employees when quake hit" ....1) 200 employees (sub-contrctor I belive) in reactor #3- but safety defult is to auto lock inside.. apperently no rescue rooms as with mine shafts.. 2) TEPCO took long time to relase employees due to trying to scan for contamination.. gave up after scaning only 20 or so due to panic... 3)IMPORTANT - employees complained of smoke or steam... having trouble breathing... apperently crane hook had fell.. 4) OK.. time of crisis all safey goes out the door ... but they operated for a hour on generators accourding to press reports... did anyone investigate cause of "smoke/steam???? during this period??? also sounds as though they had no emergency lighting that kicked in when power went off line... Main Question here other than an apperant "relaxed saftey enviroment" HAS TEPCO HAD THESE 200 (IF CORRECT) EMPLOYEES REVIEWED AND SCANED BY MEDICAL PERSONEL??? DID THEY INFACT HAVE ANY "RAD CONTAMINATIONAN" ??? WAS AN ACCIDENT REVIEW DONE TO GATHER PERTAIN INFORMATION SO AS TO "TRY AND FIGURE OUT" WHAT THE SITUTATION WAS AT THE TIME ---THIS (ACCORDING TO ARTICLE) WAS BEFORE THE WAVE HIT (accident/medical review could have been done next day- as all employee fleed to save self and familys.... if infact they have done any of this "where is the info" steam would be indicator that they may have had piping/valve/pump failure right after quake????? sorry so long

@Matsuoko Doesn't mean the vessel itself has to be broken. The turbines in the turbine hall are where the steam from the reactor vessel is meant to go in normal operation, so material from the RPV could get there without the vessel structurally being broken, if valves etc. are open. In fact, if the vessel is broken, the water coming out would go into the basement of the reactor building, not into another building that's separated by some distance. What it does mean is that some of the plumbing in the turbing hall is leaking, which doesn't bode well for any chance of starting the coolant loop.

@kb, they are entirely separate buildings, the rectangular buildings with big pipes coming out of them on the helicopter fly overs are the turbine halls. The turbines are on the ground level, and beneath them (basement) are the steam separators and pumps, this is where the workers got irradiated.

Neutron beam observed 13 times at crippled Fukushima nuke plant
TOKYO, March 23, Kyodo
Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Wednesday it has observed a neutron beam, a kind of radioactive ray, 13 times on the premises of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant after it was crippled by the massive March 11 quake-tsunami disaster.
TEPCO, the operator of the nuclear plant, said the neutron beam measured about 1.5 kilometers southwest of the plant's No. 1 and 2 reactors over three days from March 13 and is equivalent to 0.01 to 0.02 microsieverts per hour and that this is not a dangerous level.
The utility firm said it will measure uranium and plutonium, which could emit a neutron beam, as well.
In the 1999 criticality accident at a nuclear fuel processing plant run by JCO Co. in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, uranium broke apart continually in nuclear fission, causing a massive amount of neutron beams.
In the latest case at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, such a criticality accident has yet to happen.
But the measured neutron beam may be evidence that uranium and plutonium leaked from the plant's nuclear reactors and spent nuclear fuels have discharged a small amount of neutron beams through nuclear fission.

@kb : Co59 is stable. it is used in steel Cobald-Chrome-Molybdane Co-Cr-Mo steel is stainless steel. Co60 (radioactive) can only derive from Co59 by catching free Neutrons. Co60 is not in the decay line from other radioactive products. if you find Co60 in the turbine "puddle", it can only come from the steel vessel. there is no other place with free neutrons. Hence this is a kind of proof that the vessel is broken. otherwise you would never find any cobalt in the water.

To me the 'neutron beam' sounds to me like it might be a translation error. Even in the official Tepco releases where they publish gamma dose rates, they have a column for 'neutron ray', which presumably means any detection of free neutrons, not specifically some kind of directed ray or beam.

I'm pleased to read the report of how the U.S. military is helping the relief effort. For example, "•Commander Task Force 76 (CTF 76) continued harbor clearance operations in Hachinohe yesterday. USNS Safeguard (ARS 50) with the embarked divers of Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit 1, Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit 5 and Underwater Construction Team 2, worked together with Japan Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) and commercial divers to open the harbor for operations. They took underwater surveillance imagery with side scan sonar equipment to detect, mark and move underwater obstacles from the channel and the vicinity of the liquid natural gas (LNG) pier. The local port captain certified the channel and pier for safe navigation. Today an LNG tanker entered the port, marking the first delivery since the earthquake and tsunami on March 11. After Hachinohe harbor is clear, Navy teams will continue similar efforts in the ports of Miyako, Kamaishi, Ofunato, and Sendai, debris and other navigational hazards so that ships may resume deliveries of critical supplies. What kind of evidence would strongly suggest a crack, without being able to physically inspect the location? Pressure becoming equalized; inability to hold water above a certain level; escape of specific radionuclides that would only come from direct contact with hot fuel; ... I don't know for sure, but these are the kinds of evidence that I suppose the experts are looking at to make these deduction. Maybe somebody actually knows as fact ... or maybe it is just the strongest candidate explanation based on the data.

VeenOui, not necessarily. Perhaps the list of workers who can be used has a lot of crossed off names on it because many have already sustained the maximum yearly radiation allowed by Japanese government and are no longer eligible to enter the work site until some time elapses or regulations are further relaxed. I'm just hypothesizing. There could be several alternative explanations and we should not automatically jump to conclusions.

In that video I posted these young men were given rubber suits and told to go pick up pieces of the reactor that had been thrown by the explosion at Chernobyl into the area. They could only touch them for maybe 5 or 6 seconds to get them into the reactor core where the Sarcophagus would be erected. EVERY machine they tried to use failed due to radiation. It's amazing, the only machine that can function in high levels of radiation is the human body and it can't last very long.

Can the reason for "700 engineers" be because no individual can enter the area in question for long enough a period of time to accomplish very much? Perhaps they are switching in and out. I envision logistical difficulties ... imagine you are trying to install house wiring but you have to switch roles with another person every 15 minutes and you have to find a way to communicate the next thing to be done, the location of each tool, the status of things already done, etc. That would be extraordinarily difficult especially in a hazardous worksite. Eh?

@James Ward I do not watch CNN or MSNBC, but I do not trust nuclear industry advocates more than Takashi Hirose. One example of his fear-mongering rhetoric is when he speaks about radiation levels being "3,500,000 times the normal yearly dose", by calculating that a person would absorb the one-time measurement of 400 mSv every hour of every day for a full year. The link you posted is just an excerpt, but he's playing on people's fears quite a lot.

@Dom TMI did not release much radiation at all...the fact that we're talking about any radiation being released in the first place is heart breaking but the difference between level 6 and level 7 is like saying the earthquake was 8.8 or 9...the difference is immense, at least that's my understanding given the information. And to everyone on the board: Any way this is sliced it's a horrible situation, there is no way to sugar coat any of this, I just like to stick to the facts, we are all entitled to our own opinions and thoughts. I don't want to seem as if I am saying "you're wrong you're wrong!!" That's not what I'm shooting for, I'm just shooting for my own way of dealing with this. Sorry if it's coming off any other way, it's not my intention.

One thing I was wondering and haven't found mentioned anywhere in the press.. GRS data (from
www.grs.de ) has
---
Dose rate in the containment / pressure suppression pool:
R1: 40.9 Sv/h / 25.8 Sv/h
R2: 47.7 Sv/h / 1.36 Sv/h
R3: 53.3 Sv/h / 1.45 Sv/h
--
Any idea what that means? To me that looks like some fuel must have leaked from the reactor to the suppression pool in R1 (?).. but if it has, why don't people seem more worried about that - everyone seems focused on R3 mainly judging by the news?

However, (although I have not been able to corroborate this in any other source) AJW by the Asahi Shimbun posted this on Friday: "Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, crippled by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, has discharged more radiation than the infamous Three Mile Island nuclear plant in the United States, according to calculations by the central government.
...It has already reached a level 6 serious accident on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES).
Separately, calculations made by experts place the level of soil contamination in some locations at levels comparable to those found after the Chernobyl accident in 1986."

ok - it was suggested that maybe its salt damage from all the sea water being sprayed - well I think we can dismiss that for several reasons. First water will drain to the sea and if it is damage from reactor cooling activities then no containment is in place to for contaminated water. Water uptake in trees is not that fast to cause the browning.

Alpha emitters are dangerous if inhaled or ingested because the alpha particle is big, and therefore causes a huge amount of damage on tissues. Think of alpha radiation as a bowling ball, and gamma radiation as a sand particle.

@George Gibb Very interesting photographs! I can dismiss the hole in the building as a piece of the reactor building that smashed through the roof but the trees are much harder to dismiss. I can only say that when you take two different photographs of the same forest from different angles you will see more shrubbery in one angle compared to the other. For example, look at the base of the power line on the tree line edge...the trees at the base in the first photo do look sickly...now keep in mind how those trees look and match up that appearance in the second photograph. I can see how they look dead in the second picture- they are a different color in the first. I can be wrong, though.

@kb It would be nice to have moderators and I understand why we can't have 100% moderation...it's tough! I live in upstate New York and I have my friends asking me if I have a dosimeter because they think the government is lying to us. It's ridiculous! No one wants to be logical about this and say "Okay, Chernobyl did not impact my life here in the U.S. in any significant way and that was more radiation than Fukushima." Instead, they want to THINK the government is lying and make others panic, too. It's upsetting. And my problem with comparing Chernobyl and Fukushima is this: do you see an explosion with fuel rod pieces flying around everywhere? Do you see people dying within days of exposure from Fukushima? I do not. As far as I know I heard on CNN yesterday that 60% of the amount of radiation that came from Chernobyl has come from Fukushima, OVER TWO WEEKS. This means that it is dissipating in the atmosphere and not making contact with most humans in the amount that it did at Chernobyl. That's why I don't like comparing. This is much slower, and though it may not be better than no radiation at all, it is dissipating far faster than the massive explosion at Chernobyl.

They said 2 was getting fresh water I also saw blog post referencing HNK (not in english) that 2 had a leak into the non-reactor water system and was spewing radioactive water out that way. @James Ward Even if they aren't, do you think that mass amounts of people are teetering on the edge of death because they haven't told people what's going on or do you think that it may be worse than what they're saying but the proper precautions are being taken given the situation.

@Alaskan: Chernobyl also had multiple reactors with quite a lot of fuel on site.. just none of the others actually blew up (although one was burning for quite a while and had to be saved at the cost of many lives).

@Andy Do you really believe TEPCO has been telling us the truth, especially since most of us know their past history on being less than truthful on maintenance issues? Just because someone's lying to you doesn't mean anyone's generating a conspiracy...it just means they're lying. Even the Japanese PM got really angry at one point and asked TEPCO "what the hell is going on?".

Someone over on the fb page brought up a good point that I think needs to be stressed on this blog, too. "After watching the spinoffs of the blog and seeing what people are saying it's quickly turned into a platform to turn this entire situation into a conspiracy. Reuters was able to block comments that said "I think that we're being lied to....etc" and now they're all over. It's really sad to see people fear mongering and being sensational when there is no information to indicate that we should be as such. We call all infer what is happening but no one that isn't involved directly does know. If there is enough radiation to wipe out half the population of Japan I GUARANTEE you that someone will say something! Please, people, be educated on the issue instead of inferring on the issue. "

There is a practical limitation on the length of upper compartment 14. If this compartment becomes too long, it may become the site of unstable flow or "chugging." In this case upward flowing steam at the tube exit will be too great to permit water flow down into the tube. As the completely voided condition is approached, the steam flow will decrease and liquid flow will begin again. This cycle of volume and refilling will continue endlessly. This flouroscillation would not be desired and would defeat the nuclear characteristics of the water rod W. Therefore, we preferred to limit the length of upper compartment 14 to about 1/4 to 1/3 the total length of the fuel bundle depending on the counter current flow characteristics of the particular water rod design.

@Kat Two possible reasons for the lack of news about Fukushima in the news today: 1) everything has stabilized, no problems, be happy; or 2) things have gotten so serious they don't know what to say at this point; or 3) somewhere in-between. Personally, I think the situation is somewhere between points 2) and 3).

Matsuoko, I read about that days after the earthquake. If people have not the subject is worth the read. These reactors have some major design flaws. Bad enough that very high up engineers quit some very well paying jobs in protest. GE was releasing statements this week trying to dismiss the entire issue with a bunch of non-statements that avoided the issues. Those reactors need to all be decommissioned.

I'm not justifying not giving readings for Miyagi, especially as Yamagata's iodine levels are shocking next door, but with hundreds of thousands of people in temporary shelters defecating into plastic bags with running water still slow to be restored, I do see why local workers can only be dealing with that. Kan should mobilise the entire Japan Self Defense Force to help it's ridiculous having thousands of soldiers in Hokkaido and Kyushu right now.
