The units used to measure radiation are the rem and the millirem (1/1,000th of a rem). The international unit for measuring radiation exposure is the sievert (Sv), and 1 Sv = 100 rems. Therefore, to convert from the mrem values above to mSv (millisievert), divide the value by 100.

@Ralph Unger I am not. The relevance was that the N.A.I. were deeply in touch with the earth and the land and were reported to be able to sense things that we rely on science to do now. You are VERY correct in that everyone should be. Our current civilization seems to overlook it - until it's too late. Just keep minds open. Ask 'what if' until there is one finite answer [to any problem]. We're in this situation now because noone ever asks 'Yeah, but WHAT IF that happens...' Or they overlook the answer because of ignorance.

Also I'm not trying to be a stickler but there was an error in what Bev said. If neutron radiation is present that means fission is occurring. The qualifier "plutonium fission" is not accurate since there are many materials that can do nuclear fission such as uranium isotopes, radium, etc. There is enough to be concerned about without over dramatizing by inaccuracies.

Most people agree that the casings are already damaged. And the only new news is that more agree that the RPV is also damaged at 1 or 2 plants. The readings at the main gate are encouraging in that they do not indicate further fission. They might not detect it though even if it happened.

Bev, Read an article about the difference between Japan's voluntary evacuation advisory and the US. Bottom line difference (I didn't check for accuracy) is that if Japan goes beyond its current recommendation, Toyko become part of the area. You can figure out the rest.

@Meretisa Believe me, my common sense told me that the radiation was in no known way causing my nausea. But the nausea had no purpose, no cause whilst in the middle of focused labor. At the time I wasn't even remotely thinking or looking at anything related to Japan. Just odd. To negate the possibility of biological life (humans) having extrasensory abilities just because it sounds silly isn't very healthy. They used to burn witches for it tho so I'll consider myself lucky to be in a more advanced open-minded scientific society! :)

Meritisa: I'm using my Facebook page as a storage portal. Already advised my 'friends' so that they understand the postings. I try to live a purpose driven life and do believe that everything happens for a reason. We are here to learn from and about each other. I'm a Christian. An Admiral from the Pacific Fleet made a comment recently, "it's as if God has swept His arm across the landscape of Japan." Gave me chills. Very few people are paying attention to what is going on. Personally, I plan to continue pursuing the effort of learning the truth. Eventually, the truth pervails.

@Meretisa ok, now that I hear someone else say something, I'll speak up. I literally was nauseated for unexplained reasons on MAR 16 (east coast usa) and again on MAR 19. There is absolutely nothing that can correlate Fukushima to it, but I did see the pics of #3 afterwards on the 16 and my personal opinion was that it had recently actually melted. Then the black smoke I saw on the 19th..... My only conclusion is that either some people are hypersensitive to abrupt radiological changes OR (most likely) there is actually something else emitted that we aren't able to measure because we simply do not know about all of the properties of these metals. Speculation, sure. But it is a little reassuring to hear that I am not the only one to experience similar phenomenons. I'm the biggest skeptic, also, so you can imagine my conundrum...

Oh, I forgot one part. Whether we want it to or not. This will be part of our history. Especially with how bad its getting. Now whether our children or grand children will ask about it has yet to be seen. But its one of the few things I can say I witnessed. (And cared about while it was going on.) I think its the history geek in me.

The job market for teaching history is very small....I'm applying to jobs in other states and basically across the whole country in order to find a teaching position somewhere. Teaching is very difficult, even for a 24 year old that is just out of school. Kids are changing both attitude-wise and value-wise far faster than I've ever experienced, even when I was in school. I would suggest widening your horizons and going for teaching because a degree in history is basically useless, and I don't mean that to be mean, it's just tough to get a job in history unless you get a Ph.D. and end up being one of hundreds of professors applying for a college position. If you're passionate about history, stick with it, but try to think of creative ways of making yourself more marketable. Teaching is tough, that's for sure, but I do love being able to tell a group of 9th graders a story about Genghis Khan that makes their jaws drop! It's a great feeling. Sorry for the long response and off topic post! Ack!

@Sinthia Domina Indeed, seawater is one way that moisture gets into the atmosphere but as evaporation occurs huge amounts of radiation are loss in the process if not all radiation. I'm not an expert on radiation being impacted by water but I do know that the various evaporation, deposition, condensation, and sublimation actions involve some amount of loss of pollutants. That's why if you're in a survival situation and you need to drink something you can literally pee into a cup, cover it with some sort of plastic, put it in the sun, and you'll have fresh water condensation on the bottom of the plastic. lol, odd comparison but it works

@Meretisa Here is an amazing video (or set of pictures) of how volcano ash can create lightening. Enough particles collide- those particle create static charge- enough static charge needs to be released somehow and it's in the form of lightening coming from the ash clouds. Beautiful and scary at the same time:

@wtm I want to point to the steam we are talking about. It may be fall-out from that. Because all that water they are putting in there will most likely be turning in to steam instead of them flushing it out. (Its over the boiling point so...)

I second the opinion that the steam would be a negligible amount, even for local weather affectation. I too have a weather question though. Is it not true that much of the precipitation that falls is derived from evaporated seawater? Something to think about.

Protection and safety is critical. When, we are in the room assisting a patient, we wore lead aprons. It depends on the disease process. I made a statement on Reuters and some Dr. (?) countered me, but I'll stand by it (and, every radiologist in the world will concur). The diagnostic benefit outweighs the risk. The exposure is really minimal. Don't buy into the panic. Your life or the life of your loved ones could depend on it.

I base my dumping question on the facts that water seems to be pumped into the spent fuel pools and they still keep showing that it isn't filling up, the temps there seem to be stable and aren't rising, and the fact that they found puddle in the turbine buildings. If they are "Flushing" out the sea water they are putting in to flush out any debris that has fallen in the pools so it will not start a reaction, it would most likely have to go to the turbine building, where all the piping is. I would bet that there is an underground drain pipe that goes out into the ocean below from the facility. That would also account for the fact that they are finding radioactivity in the ocean 19km away. Instead of venting it into the air, they are venting it into the ocean hoping that is will disburse.

@Meretisa The earth has a neat way of geothermally dissipating the water across the globe. Ice caps, oceans, and rain/runoff. Any change to the climate from excess steam from 1 or 2 reactors is not within our measurable range.

Because the low level release of steam it will not make it into the upper atmosphere it will most likely be absorbed by flora and fauna at the surface. Though it is very hot you have to remember that volcanoes are very hot, too, and a volcano on Hawaii has been erupting for years. Long story short, it won't increase the temperature of the air or have a large impact on weather. It takes a huge amount of heat to create changes in the atmosphere.

@Meretisa Nothing I believe. If it had a large impact, then it would be seen from any large power plant that releases steam. Or Geothermal energy. Or even Volcanoes in Hawaii letting off steam as lava flows in to the ocean. But that's just my two cents on it. I don't think it would really effect anything non-local.

My son had 3 head CT's in his first 3 months of life. The Dr's wanted to keep a "complete medical record" of his development, and wanted CT's every 3 months of his first 2 years. I did some research, and said, firmly, "No". He has not had one since, and with what I am learning here, it was the right call on my part. I worry enough about the first 3, as he was so young at the time.

Before I crash - found this from IAEA facebook. Sounds ambiious on the workers: As previously reported, three workers at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant were exposed on 24 March to elevated levels of radiation. The IAEA has received additional information on the incident from the Japanese authorities.
For two of the three workers, significant skin contamination over their legs was confirmed. The Japanese authorities have stated that during medical examinations carried out at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in the Chiba Prefecture, the level of local exposure to the workers’ legs was estimated to be between 2 and 6 sieverts.
While the patients did not require medical treatment, doctors decided to keep them in hospital and monitor their progress over coming days.

The Japan temp workers it sounded like the same situation that happens in the workplace in the US. Temp workers are cheaper on an as needed basis. They are also much easier to use, abuse and toss to the side. The contract workers always lose. I have seen this in white collar jobs. I am sure it is much worse in hazardous industrial work.

For reactor #2, it seems the only two routes for that level of contamination in water outside the containment is 1) cooling water levels went above open relief valves (because operators could not tell how much water was there before adding more, and/or did not know valves were open), or 2) there is a crack -- very serious.

The Japanese authorities have stated that during medical examinations carried out at the National Institute of Radiological Sciences in the Chiba Prefecture, the level of local exposure to the workers’ legs was estimated to be between 2 and 6 sieverts.

Just talked to my boyfriend's sister, she has been in the nuclear industry as a senior technician for almost 20 years, she says 300 nuke workers have been offered positions to go to Japan from US, have had their radiation limits raised. I am trying to get her on her to give more info. She says that within the industry everyone knows authorities are lying about the seriousness of the situation.

Looks like Dr. Kaku agrees with me: Dr. Michio Kaku’s Recommendations to the Prime Minister.
“If I had the ear of the Prime Minister, I would recommend the “Chernobyl Option.”
Put the Japanese Air Force on alert
Assemble a huge fleet of helicopters. Put shielding underneath them.
Accumulate enough sand, boric acid, and concrete to smother these reactors, to entomb them forever.
This is what the Soviets did in 1986, calling out the Red Air Force and sandbagging the reactor with over 5,000 tons of concrete and sand.”

My main question was about the pump testing. From what I've read, getting fresh water recirculating is the holy grail. But it also seems almost impossible to get those pumps working again because of the extensive damage. And since the radiation and heat is so high, it seems impossible to install new pimps and piping. My question is: when do they admit they wont have new pumps? Am I missing something?

@dan If there is a leak in the turbine itself, it will release any water that has built up inside of it (the radioactive steam flows directly from the reactor to the turbine). That would be my guess. It doesn't seem to make sense to me that it is coming directly from the containment vessel, because the turbine is in a separate building.

More robots sent to Fukushima

Various: It’s still too dangerous for humans to look inside three reactors at the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Instead, robots and remote cameras will give operators details of the conditions. Other remote tools, such as unmanned fire engines, will help douse the reactors, writes David Hambling for New Scientist. This may be the start of a long robotic engagement. “I would anticipate that we are going to see a phenomenal enterprise of remote work systems that are brought to bear over the weeks, months, and years of recovering Fukushima,” says Carnegie Mellon University robotics researcher Red Whittaker to NPR’s Geoff Brumfiel.

If you dont mind me asking...are there many people who did not take the voluntary leave? Did they require you to have NEO pack ready just incase? The similarities are eerie, no? The hydrogen explosions caused by hot(temperature) zirconium claddings being exposed to air, early on in the station-black-out scenario?

@James Ward I think you meant to say nonspent fuel in the spent fuel pool :). All of the spent fuel pools have spent fuel in them.

@Sky Yes...all three. The #4 reactor was empty, but had spent fuel in the spent fuel pool. Haven't heard much about #5 and #6 lately.

All have core damage, low water levels where the core should be submerged but can't be kept submerged, and leakage of highly radioactive water into the basement through some sort of "loosening" although nobody is quite willing to declare there is an actual breach of the reactor pressure vessel.

There are no ships in port Yokosuka at this time. All that were here went up north to help with relief efforts, vice the GW.

Coherent updates with a standard format (like a spreadsheet) from the authorities would be nice. It would make reading changes easier

So they are pumping the irradiated water that is 10,000 time the limit into a container right beside it, the condenser vessel, through the manhole access they said in conference on NHK a little while ago, seems like the radiation will still be extremely high.
